Not known by that many outside of boxing, but he was a hard as hell fighter and Ali stated he gave the best dig he’d ever taken. He ended up local, worked the doors not far from me and was the gentlest, happiest bloke you could want to welcome you into a boozer. 89 fights and he won 68 by knockout. Some young lads used to square up to him when they couldn’t get in. He’ll be missed - an absolutely brilliant bloke who went to war with Ali, Holmes and Norton - but also wouldn’t let me into Yates’s in the mid-2000s because I had shit jeans on. He was right. Rest in power, big man.

Rest in power, big man. I was lucky enough to meet him a few times and he was always a joy to chat too. Very happy to talk boxing and his career. Best story I heard about him was some scallies tried robbing a bus he was on. Earnie calmly walked to the front and threw them one by one out the door. Then one of them stupidly tried getting back on and walked straight into a huge Shavers right hand. Sending him flying back out the door horizontally. The 70's Heavyweight scene was ferocious and Shavers was regarded by the other fighters as the biggest hitter of all of them! He must have had some crazy power.

Always saw him as some sort of untouchable figure due to studying film at A level and university, but he's taken a bit of a drubbing due to some shoddy films in recent times. His best stuff is really, really good though. Breathless, Le Mepris and Week-End are all films I'd happily watch again. Might give Made in USA a go soon, as it's on Netflix and is definitely from the 'good' Godard era.

Visiting a friend at uni and finding out her quite horsey flatmate was studying film, pretentious arsehole 19yo Superbacon opened with "Oh cool, what's your favourite Godard?" and the night went swimmingly* from there. I absolutely adored him. I knew him as Felix in Eastenders and never watched Friday Night Dinner.
