He was also a brilliant critic and film historian, and a decent actor as well. Strongly recommend Paper Moon, which is wonderful, and What's Up, Doc? Playing an Italian mob boss. He was hilarious in it. I wouldn't have wanted to have fucked around with Sidney Poitier.
