Example: we've adopted in general the suffix "-holic" to signify a person addicted to something, despite the fact that it's just the last half of the adjective of "alcohol". Or adding "-gate" as a suffix to words to imply a scandal, just because Watergate was significant enough to become representative of all modern scandals in which something was leaked or came to light. This very discussion about the word "stan" - it signifies an obsessive fan, which is in itself an example of necessary language change, because the word "fan" has become such a common term that it's lost the same, particular nuance of its origin word, "fanatic".

I was also a miserable prick this morning so that didn't help.
