The General Politics Thread v2.0 (AKA the "Labour are Cunts" thread)

It does feel like people are willing to try a line in the sand over this. And people across the political spectrum too, which is somewhat unprecedented in this binary/partisan age.

Aside from any other criticism of them, ID cards just feel like a solution in search of a problem. It's something Blair pushed for, and got a lot of criticism for then, and so now it just feels like a New Labour tribute act.

In fairness, it’s all speculation regarding Euan Blair’s company making the ID cards. Nothing has actually been confirmed yet. If it does happen, then it’s rank hypocrisy from Labour considering what the Tories did during Covid. I’d hope they wouldn’t dare.

Surely they wouldn't be that stupid. Even if it was the best bid I'd just make sure it didn't happen due to the criticism.

I'm not really arsed either way about ID cards but it is quite blatantly something they want to implement and have attempted to use the "get rid of foreigners" spin as a way of trying to win people round to the idea.  It's been great watching the various Labour puppets try to explain how ID cards will prevent people from working illegally, when the whole point is illegal workers are working because employers aren't bothering with the checks that already exist.  These people are already off the books, cash in hand and/or working under someone else's identity, so how exactly is a Digital ID is going to change anything.

Apparently it's quite easy to "borrow" or steal someone's NI number, I'm not sure how but apparently so. How much the digital ID would change things is unclear because as you point out it doesn't eradicate cash in hand work or forms of modern day slavery.

The big problem with trying to spin it as being tough on immigration is that many of the people who have been indoctrinated by Reform and Lil Tommy to hate immigrants don't trust the government and this won't get them on their side. This just comes across as more government control. Not sure what fuckwit thought the way to gain more trust was introduce a compulsory ID. Just screams how out of touch the government are and I'd say they are more out of touch than the Tories were/are.

EDIT: I still don't think it goes ahead. I actually think Labour would gain favour by coming out and saying we see people are not happy with this, we are listening and we are putting it on hold while we gain public feedback and get a policy that the public feel represents them.

Every time my neighbour knocks on the door it’s to moan about the tree in my garden. She, like Starmer, can get in the bin.

It's apparently quite common with certain delivery jobs, as when you don't have things like a regular workplace and boss to go to it's easier for people to borrow/rent the account of someone who has passed a right to work check. Once you have a job as a food delivery driver, nobody is checking your photo ID on a regular, or even irregular, basis to ensure who is actually doing the job.

What could possibly be more British than painting a fence...no wait, hang on what the fuck are you talking about?

So out of touch it's straight up insanity.

When it comes to the whole "illegals are delivering my Chinese with a borrowed Just Eat account" thing... Ok, why do I give a fuck? As long as they don't spit on my mock chicken balls.
