CTXRussomark Posted February 27 Posted February 27 Fantastic news, and great to see that twat Goodwin soundly defeated. He looked irate having to stand and listen to the victory speech. More of this please! Fuck Starmer. Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted February 27 Paid Members Posted February 27 Gorton deserves this. They deserve a genuinely progressive candidate who knows what's like to be in the position of so many people in that area. Really pleased for them and like @deathrey says, it's a glimmer of hope. Notable how quiet Starmer fans and canvassers have gone as well. I wonder if it's because they know how badly they've fucked it or if they're writing up the latest way to blame this on Corbyn. Quote
Paid Members Dead Mike Posted February 27 Paid Members Posted February 27 The perfect result. Really hammers home the power (and importance) of tactical voting and, like Caerphilly costs Reform massively, both reputationally & financially (they apparently spent massively on this!). The result will give the government a kick in the arse & I imagine Reform voters will claim 'fix' as the frustrated reality that Russian bots can't actually vote hits home. Quote
Merzbow Posted February 27 Posted February 27 In the middle of some major Reform infighting too, people turning on Farage and dickheads splintering off into other groups because the party isn't racist enough. Hopefully this just fuels a major implosion. Quote
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted February 27 Paid Members Posted February 27 If Labour were remotely intelligent or had the slightest bit of backbone they would look at the rise of the Green Party and think "hey, perhaps this is a sign people are turning towards progressive policies, government figures that actually care and believe in things that matter to regular people and want to make life better for everyone - perhaps we should follow suit and increase our popularity" but my guess is they will just increase their attacks on them and continue try to appeal to right wing voters, leading to left leaning voters abandoning them and the right wing voters not voting for them either. Bunch of dickheads. Quote

The far-right doing what is historically the behaviour of the far-left and completly splintering and dividing themselves into daft factions. Seeing one racist tell another racist thet're not racist enough because they're voting for Reform instead of fucking Advance or Restore is hilarious once you get over the sheer depression of it all. Paid Members LaGoosh Posted February 27 Paid Members Posted February 27 I think deep down Reform voters don't even want a Reform government. They like feeling like the under dogs and the victims and blaming everyone else for their shitty lives - it feeds their arrogance. And when Reform gets into power and doesn't solve the immigration issues and everything goes to absolute shit they'll have no one to moan at and blame for all their problems anymore (they still will though, I'm sure). Bunch of dickheads. Heidi Alexander was just in the Today programme calling them dangerous fantasists, selling fairytales and (most bizarrely) wanting to cosy up to Putin, so to noone’s surprise your prediction is spot on. I hate this miserable grey island. Infected with apathy. Quote
organizedkaos Posted February 27 Posted February 27 So I was having a conversation about this recently so maybe it's just a bit stuck in my head but this is the first paragraph of the Guardian's newsletter Quote Good morning. Hannah Spencer is the new MP for Gorton and Denton after the Green party’s first ever parliamentary byelection victory. In a bitter blow to Keir Starmer, Labour were pushed into third place in a constituency the party has represented for nearly a century. Reform’s Matt Goodwin came second, as Nigel Farage claimed the result was “a victory for sectarian voting and cheating”. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/feb/27/friday-briefing-is-the-result-in-gorton-and-denton-a-sign-of-things-to-come Why, still, is it that Nigel Farage is the first person quoted in an article about this by election that his party lost? Why is there no follow up on his accusations of cheating? I don't think it's all some sort of journalistic conspiracy I assume it's most likely "Nigel Farage pisses left wing people off" but it still rather feels like he's allowed to dominate the narrative without any attempt to report on his lies. Or maybe i'm just creating some sort of reason to get annoyed? There's a genuine part of me that thinks i'm missing an obvious reason for this sort of reporting? Quote

Engagement. Same reason Farage is on Question Time loads, people who support & oppose him will watch & comment. Some LibDem backbencher will get tumbleweeds. Its all rage bait. Quote

One thing that's been grounds for hope is that a lot of Reform-run councils are, as expected, utterly incompetent and/or cynically predatory regarding public services, and the idiots who voted them in are now also sick of their shit, and now their points are going down. Add to that that Musk is backing Restore (and his arrogance won't allow him to accept that the best that will get him is a split vote), and fingers crossed, we may see the right split between the Tories, Reform, and Restore. Under a FPTP system that would render them impotent. That's not to say I don't think we should reform the electoral system to PR or STV, but last election it was the only time I was ever thankful it was still FPTP - there would've been a lot more Reform MPs otherwise.
