Sky had just negotiated a deal to get all PPVs on box office and WWE brought out the network the next month, or a very short while after, rendering it somewhat pointless. So there was definitely a bad taste there. I think Sky then kicked off about main event being on the network before it aired in the UK and that's what led to geoblocking of the live feed when it was on (IIRC).

Part of that deal actually was being able to show main event. As if anyone was that bothered about it even back then! Regardless of that though they had been promoting the network coming for months before it launched so Sky would be fully aware of what they were going to do. And apparently BT tried to win the rights back then and failed.

If they were aware, why would they have bothered going to great lengths to secure an exclusive deal for PPVs, knowing they were about to be massively undercut?

You’ll have to ask Murdoch. I mean, maybe they don’t follow WWE programming to be aware they were launching a network. The one which they had been hyping for two years plus at this point. Or, maybe they banked on the fact not everyone would pay for it and that people would still pay for it on Box Office out of habit, or that people might live in poor internet areas and so couldn’t get the network? Maybe those spending £100 on Sky couldn’t afford another £10 per month to see PPV events they weren’t interested in, but would buy the big ones? People still actually pay for WWE PPV’s you know. And the network is not the most reliable at times.

You're arguing in circles with yourself. None of this is relevant to the already off-topic tangent, where it was floated that maybe Sky were annoyed with WWE for undercutting their PPV deal (because obviously) and that might be part of why their deal wasn't renewed. Along with shitty ratings.

I'm sure Sky could pick AEW up on the cheap (or even convince moneybags genius business guru Khan to pay them to air it) and use it to fill the vast chasm of airtime on their sport's channels when there's no football on. Sky have lots more channels on lots less football coverage than they used to, so would be handy to pad out the schedules once WWE go to the land of Michael Owen.

which seems to make sense. But if you want to get the biggest audience you can, Sky Sports is not the right destination. ITV or another FTA channel could make it blow up. ITV would be a great home for it and seems to be the option they were hoping for

They have two dedicated football channels, and they don't really show it on the other sports channels unless its simulcast. I think they think as it does about the same ratings as any other sport they care to show these days, they can replace it with something cheaper without much fuss. That said, WWE will leave a big gap in the schedules as they show about 4 different edits of Raw and Smackdown each, plus the live shows, Main Event and Experience. AEW presumably is going to have a lot less programming, so it's not exactly like for like.

Why would Khan pay to be on sky sports? That is the dumbest suggestion ever. It’s pointless being on Sky because it won’t fill anywhere near the hours WWE have left behind. Much better suited to an ITV channel where they can get a good rating In a poor time slot and and another good rating at a reasonable time the following evening. AEW isn’t going to show up and start putting out WWE hours, so they have nothing at all to offer Skysports

I'm guessing based on the rumour he paid TNT to air it. And we know that is something TNA did in the past

Wrestling is an odd fit for SKY Sports anyway, not being a sport. WWE has tenure, name value and hours of programming. and even then, SKY has decided it's not worth what BT will pay. AEW without any of those things isn't worth it.
