Paid Members BomberPat Posted December 11, 2020 Paid Members Posted December 11, 2020 the best thing about Sting in WWE was that he completely ignored whatever guidance they give on promos and talked directly into the camera, in a way no one had in that company for years. There's a reason him and Goldberg came in and felt like real stars even in their dotage. I'd be curious what they had in mind for him if he hadn't got hurt; the Rollins match at least meant they saw him as a top level anti-Authority guy, and I wonder what they were going to do with him at Wrestlemania had he still been available. I could see him having fallen roughly into the role Goldberg has, where they just trot him out whenever there's call for a big match that doesn't have much in the way of storyline implications. He definitely should have had more value for them even as a non-wrestler, though. Him against The Authority should have set him up as a babyface authority figure to counterbalance them once it became clear that he wasn't going to wrestle again. I don't think he did anything after his retirement and Hall of Fame induction other than a Ric Flair Appreciation Night or somesuch nonsense. Just in order to get some merch sales from him you think they'd keep him in the mix.
The Cutting Edge Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 I watched both his HHH and Rollins match recently, Trip's match is a simple main event style match and DX/nWo (should've been Wolfpac) run ins were fun. Rollins again was good although crowd were pretty quiet for most of it, I know the injury is what's remembered about the match, but it's a proper main event with table bumps etc not a "protect the old guy match" probably should've been in hindsight. i also watched his wwe doc other day, his interactions with trips and Vince are pretty awkward, I wonder how much Sting and WWE were comfortable working together, hence not using him much or keeping him.
Paid Members Chris B Posted December 11, 2020 Paid Members Posted December 11, 2020 It didn't dawn on me until someone said it that, obviously, Kenny Omega's bus didn't actually travel to Impact to film outside. The magic of TV. That was such a fun show. It really is amazing how much stuff is constantly going on - pretty much everyone has a feud and a secondary feud. And yet, it didn't feel chaotic - it felt organic. And Kenny Omega is such a tremendous dickhead. What on earth was Jake Roberts wearing? He's just the sleaziest man alive. The difference in presentation with Sting is just incredible - I'm glad the snow wasn't just a one-off, as it's such a cool entrance. Further to what @BomberPat was saying, I think part of WWE's weird usage of him is connected to their old thinking that they know how to present people properly. So they can't do Sting as Sting was, in the same way Goldberg had to be WWE's Goldberg. So when they started off by showing Sting in a very classic way (avenger of the people against the controlling authority), they suddenly went 'oh shit, this is WCW Sting, and WCW didn't know how to present stars - we need to show how WE'D present Sting'. And when they couldn't improve it, they decided they had to show how inferior he was. After that, they lost interest in doing anything new with him, but he was an easy pop and merch sell.

There’s nothing more telling than how the best usage of Sting in WWE remains the 2K commercial that was produced by a third party. An advert for a virtual Sting in a video game ended up better produced and more exciting than anything they did when he actually turned up in the flesh.
Paid Members IANdrewDiceClay Posted December 11, 2020 Paid Members Posted December 11, 2020 Think it says a lot about WWE's value of Sting that they had fake Sting on the back of his DVD cover. A company famous for their attention to detail, and that shit slipped through the net. That and the nWo being Stinger's soldiers in the fight against DX at WrestleMania makes me think nobody on the writing team or Vince or Kevin Dunn had seen 3 minutes of Sting career's in their life.
Moderators PowerButchi Posted December 11, 2020 Moderators Posted December 11, 2020 They should have had Lex Luger wheeled down as his back up, and then - inevitably - Lex turns on him so HHH won.

Maybe they thought they had Jeff Farmer on their hands all along? Either that or Vince was watching in mid 1996. Edited December 11, 2020 by garynysmon

I've heard it mentioned a few times in various shoots that Vince literally doesn't watch other products, even to check the competition. Considering the success he's had I find that absolutely insane. Publicly don't mention watching other shows of course, but you would privately keep an eye on things/future talent surely? Good bosses delegate, but fucking hell, he's apparently clueless of stuff out of his bubble. The best version of the Sting advert includes the RAW crowd reaction. Everyone goes mental at the face paint and Sting's face, then when the 2k logo appears and they realise its just for a game they all groan and Boo! A WWE crowd who have never seen Sting on WWE tv, know who he is and Boo when he doesn't appear. Vince couldn't have got an assistant to watch some 97 Nitros and explain to him what would be a good direction to go in? What the fuck was that Mania entrance with the Japanese drummers too? Melts my brain.
Joe Blog Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 Vince probably thought he had signed Muta.

Which sounds incredible even today. Its like a Tim Burton Batman soundtrack. So of course they give him Big Show and Undertaker's old theme remixed. This company obviously had no idea who Sting was. I mean, they knew him, but didnt now his character. The 900 writers, Kevin Dunn, Stephanie and Vince couldnt have gotten the vibe of him anymore wrong. From the music, to his motivation being "I really want a WrestleMania match!", to the whole thing about him sitting at home for 15 years wishing WCW was still around. Fucking dumb arse twats. Yakashi Posted December 11, 2020 Posted December 11, 2020 Imagine changing that fucking music. Especially for the absolute shit they used instead.
LCJ Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 WWE buried Sting on purpose as he was a WCW guy and was the company's top guy when WCW was on top of the world and kicking the WWF's arse in the ratings every Monday Night.
HeavyT Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 Get shamrock in for the craic. Shamrock vs Sting, vs Jericho. Matches id loved to have seen in the early 00s.

I didn't mind his music, the intro is too long but once the slow guitars starts it gets better and more Sting-esq, still not as good as his wcw and tna theme's but they almost had it.
