It seems the diary of Samuel Pepys might be more interesting than I thought when we heard about it at school. I feel this entry is very UKFF appropriate

He had the shits and had to go twice in the chimney because the maid had neglected to leave him a chamber pot.

My favourite bit is how when the Great Fire Of London starts his immediate reaction is to bury his cheese in the garden.

I went down a Gilligan's Island rabbit hole recently. It's one of those shows that's still referenced constantly in American media but as far as I am aware wasn't broadcast much if at all over here in my lifetime, but I've heard so much about it I feel like I know it. It's a simple premise, a chartered boat from Hawaii is caught in a storm and the boat's passengers wash up on a desert island. Gilligan is the ships mate, you've got a captain, rich couple, a movie star, a professor and a farm girl. They have various adventures trying to get off etc. I watched a few eps, it's very watchable, pretty corny but diverting enough. It was a popular show, it ended up spinning off into a cartoon, and another cartoon where they get lost in space.

What fascinated me however, is that in 1973 after it had been cancelled, the show's producer/creator started another show called Dusty's Trail which was almost the exact same premise, but instead of a ship crashing on a desert island, they were on a stagecoach that got separated from a wagon train and lost on the trail to California. Each episode they would have various adventures trying to get back to the wagon train. The same actor played the "Gilligan" role, though called Dusty, and the entire cast of characters were just rip offs of the old show, so you had a rich couple, professor etc. The cheekiest, laziest shit! Cancelled after one series. Good.

To be fair, we've done it here in the UK too - after the success of Up, Pompeii!, there was the almost identical in premise, but thematically completely different (and highly problematic) Whoops, Baghdad as a vehicle for Frankie "Titter Ye Not" Howerd. Quite rightly, the latter was a complete failure.

I'm fairly sure there are a few of these - currently racking my brains trying to remember...

The word cleavage wasn't used in regard to tits until the mid 1940s when someone from the Motion Picture Association of America used the word to complain about Jane Russel's jugs being too visible in The Outlaw.

TIL Marc Haynes of Wrestle Me fame, is the same person who provided that absolutely lovely Roger Moore anecdote about meeting 'James Bond' at Nice airport as a child.

It's been one of my favourite films since I was about 13, but it always baffled me when they speak about it in Dazed and Confused (they try and list all the episodes) as it was the only reference I didn't get.

I had a fantastic reference book called Retro Hell when I was a teenager, and I got a lot of knowledge from that. Roger Ramjet stands out as a name from that. Well worth picking up a copy if you ever see it.

Roger Ramjet was getting regular play on the Children's Channel in 1991 when I got Sky. Made good use of the Yankee Doodle song in all sorts of ways. Also still seeing play from the sixties was Here Comes the Grump.

Saw a post on Reddit where someone said TIL Miriam Margolyes’ name doesn’t rhyme with gargoyles and also realised I’d been reading and saying her name wrong forever.
