The Official UKFF RAW thread (part 2)...

Recommended Posts

From what I recall, I believe Adnan Virk (and the new backstage announcer on Smackdown, I think) came under a directive from the new ‘power broker’ Nick Khan to appeal to an ever broader base than WWE already tries to and court Hollywood money.

Rumours seem to be either Tom Phillips (who shouldn't have been taken off in the first place), Vic Joseph (which may be likely if he isn't on NXT tonight) or another outsider as Virk's replacement. Wouldn't surprise me though if it's none of the above and Cole ends up pulling double duty every week

Hold on...

things can change, things can go your way. Maybe that’s what he was hoping would happen.

That’s the shortest stint of anyone on the commentary desk isn’t it? Good pub question if so.

Not familiar with his work. Anyone know much about him? Will he be a better fit?

I really like Jimmy and have done since he was on Fight Quest absolutely donkeys ages ago, but I'll be very surprised if he works out in the WWE environment.

For starters, even in MMA he was never the lead/play by play guy but more like the color/ technical analyst guy. Think of him as being like Joe Rogan but without the obvious biases. I'd be very surprised if he can fill the Cole spot.

Hope he does well. He probably won't.

I think he commentated baseball didn't he? That kinda slow paced, methodical review probably suits him well but this just didn't work.

He was primarily a studio host for ESPN, on some pretty fast-paced shows TBF. College Football Final is akin to Match of the Day but only 1hr (including ads) and with around 40 games covered, done live in the early hours of Sunday morning too. I can definitely see why they thought it might translate as it's very much a "drop in a soundbyte, throw to the analysts" style, but obviously it didn't.

As far as I know he'd done precious little PBP type stuff before, but on reflection being the lead announcer on Raw is maybe closer to being a studio host than a "commentator" these days, particularly in a 3-man booth.

I mean he's clearly professional and a decent employee

Other than getting escorted off ESPN premises for (allegedly) leaking information, yeah 😉

I’m by no means not an AEW fanboy, but watching the overall energy in the ring, in the wrestlers, in the commentary, and in the product overall, that DoN had, when compared to Raw, not just last night, but every week.

Seeing the two compared, is like chalk and cheese.

You're also comparing a big PPV with a crowd to a 3 hour soulless piece of shit.

Have to agree.

Huge part of the problem is that with WWE I feel like I have seen everything a million times before, both the wrestlers and the matches.

AEW is still fresh for me. New captivating characters like OC, Jungle Boy, Darby, Page etc that just look and feel the part. Plus guys like Jericho, Mox, Pac, Omega etc to compliment them. I like how a lot of the wrestlers have allies that they depend on and have been with for a long time rather than the WWE's weird thing of two blokes who have never had any interaction to becoming best mates and teammates all of a sudden to not teaming again for 6 months.

AEW in front of crowds is brilliant, DON blew Wrestlemania clean out of the water as both a show and spectacle.

WWE is complete rubbish. And that includes the laughably overrated Smackdown. AEW has it flaws but at least it resembles a living, breathing wrestling show. WWE is so far gone it barely merits discussion at this point. Utter fucking shite.

Smackdown was very good until Daniel Bryan left. Probably the best wrestling show on TV this year up until that point.
