We don't have chicken salt here, but chicken seasoning isn't far off, and that's easily available. Great stuff on chips.

Dunn's River chicken seasoning by any chance?

Hahahaha, that's one of them, but I think most supermarkets do their own versions of it.

That sounds amazing, is it available is asda or aldi?

Don't think it's in Aldi, might be in Asda though. It is definitely on amazon but don't tell an Australian how much you'd pay for it though. They think nothing of paying through the nose for shit beer though, so we still come out ahead.

Edit: any chicken seasoning I've had is not even in the league of chicken salt.

Didn't realise it was still going, I swear they pulled it from the shelves when I was a kid because nobody bought it. They're shit, they're gone, we all move on.

Chicken Salt is amazing . Didn’t think you could get it in the UK.

For people like me who can’t cool anything more than a microwave dinner, are there any really good cookbooks out there that really are for idiots ?

I used to fucking love Ricicles as a kid. I bought a box this year for the first time in a while and they were so fucking sweet I had to cut them with Rice Krispies to make them edible.

I've just got this image of you sat at a table with a pile of Rice Krispies and Ricicles on a mirror, and a credit card.

Good Lord. I may never eat anything else ever again..

Tried it. Found it horrible.

Any variant of a "student cookbook" is usually worth checking out for dead simple stuff, and with the assumption that you've not cooked properly before.

One of the best student dishes is Patrick Pie.

Tin of beans in a baking dish, mashed potato on top, grated cheese as an option on top, bake on middle heat for about fifteen, twenty minutes.

I think you will only get how it works if you cook something you really like to eat.

It's a great learning curve to start with a mince-based dish: once you know how to put together a (English) spaghetti bolognese, you can make a (English) chilli. Then shepherd's pie. Then cottage pie. Then lasagne. Then any savoury mince dish you can think of is a short hop from there. Because the building blocks for anything in this category are:

1. brown mince in a pan over a high heat, remove and put to one side

2. fry an onion over a lower heat in the same pan. Maybe garlic too

3. add the meat back

4. add herbs and spices

5. add your wet stuff, usually starting with a tin of tomatoes. Raise the heat to bubbling then bring it down again

Let it cook for a bit longer, taste for seasoning and you're away.

You get a bunch of basic skills here: browning meat, chopping onions, controlling temperatures, setting timers, tasting your food.

If you want more advice, go to The Cookery Thread. Butch will kill me for being in here swearing people off chips, gravy and cheese in various tinned combinations.

A few years ago a mate of mine said he was having “... Kingdom Pie for tea tonight lads”.

I got needlessly excited as it was simply two large bowls worth of Smash mash presented in one medium sized bowl. Just the way he likes it apparently.
