General Movie (Film for snobs) News Thread

Seem's that UKFF favourite Tom Cruise is literally going to Space for a stunt in an action movie. What a guy!

Sashfilm - Tom Cruise in space!

I’d take all these announcements with a pinch of salt.

No productions are happening now, and none likely to start this year.  So you’ve a full slate of 2020 movies to be made next year.  Plus some production companies, some cinemas will go bust.

There’s a lot of contract posturing going on but a lot of it will go out the window when production finally starts again next year.

No idea if this is a temporary thing but still pretty huge.

No idea about Mubi, so what does this announcement mean?

Normally, they have a curated collection of films on their site of 30 titles, with one in and one out every day.

But now they've opened up their library of all the films they've shown over about the last year plus access to their own releases (like Under the Silver Lake and Portrait of a Lady on Fire) for the first time.

I got access for £1 about 6 weeks ago on a 3 months deal so it's even better for me.

Mubi has always been a curated feed, effectively. A new movie each day, deleted after 30 days.

So a library with past offerings up there permanently makes it, effectively, an arthouse Netflix.

Superb gents. I just assumed it was a permanent library so now I get it. I may take a week off soon and dive in

I quite liked the idea of a bespoked playlist, it seemed more manageable than poking around on Prime for hours. The thought of them opening up their library actually turns me off, even though it’s undoubtedly a better offer.

I get your point but it's still not an extensive collection by any means. You could easily browse through everything they have in less than half an hour. I also think the attraction is it's still very much of a curated base with them adding films in collections or to adhere to any seasons they're running. Not to mention that almost all the titles they have aren't available on any other streaming platforms, and a number of them are outright obscurities you won't see anywhere else.
