Great guitarist. I knew him from the Blues Brothers band so that’s where my affection for him came from, but the list of songs he contributed to through Booker T and through Stax Records is amazing.

That's a sad one for me. I was brought up on Motown & Stax, generally leaning more towards the latter. Took my mum to see Cropper on a UK tour about a decade ago, the stories he told between songs were as good as the songs themselves.

If anyone ever finds themselves in Memphis, the Stax museum is well worth a look.

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa has passed away at the of 75. What a cracking performance he gave as Shang Tsung.

Steve Cropper was culturally significant for me and my mates growing up. We all got into The Blues Brothers in a big way when we were in our teens, going to see several tribute bands and blues nights in the late 90s.

When we played in our own band, “play it Steve!” would be said multiple times, despite none of us sharing the Colonel’s name.

When we started going to the pubs, we found his doppelgänger propping up the bar in one of our locals and we bought him a drink. We’d see him every week for years after that, and he’d always have a chat. We’d just called him Steve, deciding never to ask his real name as it seemed more fun that way.

I’ve been planning on watching the Blues Brothers again over the weekend, and will raise a glass to the great man.

He was brilliant in the couple of episodes of Miami Vice he appeared in when I watched that recently too, but yeah for a lot of people he was the definitive Shang Tsung. Like Raul Julia before him, an excellent actor that gave his all to a part that didn’t necessarily deserve it and in turn is fondly remembered.

Tagawa also put in a fun appearance in Sabrina The Teenage Witch, as a kung-fu teacher that she uses magic to beat.

He was in Licence To Kill with Timothy Dalton for about half an hour, but was still great. He had such a presence. He was great in Mortal Kombat, but I feel went the opposite way to Raul Julia. It felt like Raul Julia was having such a great time and really hamming it up as Bison, while Cary Tagawa was playing it completely straight as Shang Tsung. He was brilliant in the games as well. You could tell he loved the role.

Ahh he’s so much fun in Mortal Kombat. Very fitting that the video game Shang Tsung was brought in line with his portrayal of the character as he was tremendous in the role. One of the meanest mean mugs you will ever see. Hopefully the character will stay that way going forward in his honour.

It's not a good movie at all but he's the perfect guy to be the bad guy in Showdown in Little Tokyo.

I just saw that Frank Gehry, the architect, has passed away at the age of 96. That's not a bad innings, and he designed some rather interesting buildings. He also appeared in a episode of the Simpsons.
