My lasting impression of Gehry amongst all his wonder is just how ridiculous but brilliant that arena in Simpsons looks and how you know he wished he could've done something so wild in real life. 

A real virtuoso in architecture and building, long may his legacy be cherished.

Raul Malo, the voice of The Mavericks, died at 60 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Over the weekend two nights at The Ryman celebrated his life and music.  Sadly, he was taken critically ill before the performances happened and died in hospital yesterday.

I am crestfallen.  An absolute hero of mine.  I've seen The Mavs countless times, as well as several Raul solo shows.  It was basically impossible to not have a great time at a Mavericks show, the highlight of which was usually when Raul came on stage with just his guitar, hushed the crowd so that a dropping pin could be heard before he ripped your heart out with his voice.

A tremendous loss.  Sleep well you beautiful man.

Man, what a kick in the balls that is. I knew he'd been battling cancer for a while but I didn't realise it had taken a turn like that. I should have clocked when some of my favourite independent country groups/acts started posting about him and covering Mavericks songs this past weekend. 

What a voice and what a band. I think some people think of The Mavericks as one-hit wonders and they don't have the reputation as being the coolest band out there, but they're fucking class. My brother saw them live and said they were incredible. Wish I'd gotten the chance to see them too. 

Seeing just about everyone in the business giving glowing tributes to the man. Seems he was a genuinely great guy as well as being exceptionally talented.

Obviously over here they're mainly known for "Dance the NIght Away" but their catalogue is so much more.  Even the Christmas album is absolutely tremendous.  I'd seen them many times and I'm still gutted that I didn't catch them last year as I thought I'd catch them next time round.

They were the first band I hung around after a show for to get their autograph and got all 4 boxes of the Trampoline cover art signed by the respective Mav.  The girl I went with considered asking Raul to sign her boobs, but offered up the tour shirt instead at autograph time.

Wasn’t a fan myself, but my Dad loved them to the point that he went to see them every time they played at the Bridgewater Hall, and after a few times they recognised him and Raul used to come down from the stage to say hello to him.  This was after his stroke and he was in the wheelchair section at the front.  Made his day every time, and I think it was so lovely of him to do that.    Class act and this is a real shame.

Stanley Baxter died yesterday aged 99.  When I was a young’un he did a New Years Eve Variety Show every year that nearly everyone watched as there was fuck all else on.

Lived long, came out, hopefully found peace with himself as he apparently struggled for a long time with his sexuality.

Mr Majeika was a really nice show with a memorable theme tune, but never met a person who didn't say it also had a feeling of melancholy to it.

Add me to that list of people. I loved that series, but bloody hell, it could be bleak at times. The theme tune has a touch of the wistful about it too.

This thread is not supposed to be a news feed. If people want obituaries I'm sure they can subscribe to whatever rss you do. If what you are posting is not a genuine attempt to start a conversation then just leave it.
