Jacko
The scariest thing about trump is it really wouldn’t shock to see him win another term and can you imagine four more years of this division and hatred that he fuels with his actions and tweets Edited June 2, 2020 by Jacko
SuperBacon
The LAPD hosted a live zoom meeting with questions from the public. It did not go well.

I've heard the term "Photo op" used about that situation a few times, but having watched an unedited 8 minute video of it on Twitter I saw that it was literally no more than that. Their story was that he wanted to see the damage caused by the rioters who are the one & only problem right now in an otherwise hunky-dory USA. His sons tweeted photos of him bravely walking out of the front gate with his security and advisors behind him (not showing twice as much security walking in front behind the camera). He walked towards the Church - never even LOOKED AT IT - stood where someone told him to stand, let the press take photos, and cleared off again all in less than 2 minutes. https://twitter.com/CalebJHull/status/1267600785241669634?s=20 Edited June 3, 2020 by dopper

Museums filled with 'artifacts' from other countries, black neighbourhoods ploughed to rubble to make room for another Starbucks, where police are beating and murdering the descendents of people who were looted from Africa. Yeah, opportunism. I can't help but look at the United States as a country that's so full of smoke and mirrors that its unreal. I'm generalising here, but when you have a huge chunk of the population educated to be culturally unaware of what's going on outside of its borders, its able to hoodwink a chunk of its populace that they enjoy these mythical freedoms not available elsewhere, so can masquerade as a free, modern democracy. In fact its essentially ruled by an oligarchic elite, prepared to do whatever is needed to protect this ultra capitalism at all costs. I can't watch a vox pop asking what people think of "socialised medicine" or an NRA spokesman without becoming very angry. You're not necessarily wrong, but we can't exactly be smug about it - if there's any country whose populace's ignorance of its history comes close to matching that of the US, it's the UK. Possibly the most significant thing the UK has ever done politically is the British Empire. Yet how many of us can say we ever really studied it at school? I'll bet a pound to a penny that, if any number of people have, they can be counted on the fingers of one hand. I am firmly of the belief that one of the most significant reasons we keep voting these horrendous cunts into power and never really change anything societally for the better past a superficial level is because our general population have never been taught about the sheer evil shit committed by the empire. It's only ever referred back to in the vaguest of terms, and at worst with a kind of "Oh, the empire - what were we like back then, eh, lads?" attitude. It enables the kind of exceptionalism and jingoism we've seen backing the xenophobia that drove the Brexit debate and paved the way for the likes of Johnson and his cavalcade of bastards to take power on the back of a bit of flag-waving and a "Believe In Britain" narrative. It wouldn't be the silver bullet to solve all of this country's problems, but I do think that, if people in general were properly taught, at school, about stuff like the Raj, the Amritsar Massacre, the Mau-Mau Uprising, the Boer Wars, the Opium Wars, the divvying up of Africa and Asia, the betrayal of Tecumseh's Rebellion, the partitions of Cyprus and Ireland, the Black & Tans, the treatment of the miners, the Luddites, the Chartists, the Diggers & the Levellers, and the innumerable execrable things the British establishment has done to preserve power for its privileged few, we'd probably see a sea-change in the public's attitude as to what sort of people should be in power, what society is supposed to be for, and how we can try and make it work for everyone instead of blaming the poor for their own destitution and lauding the rich for their avarice.
