Not to sound like Norm MacDonald, but I didn’t even know he was sick. Apparently he’s been suffering with cancer the past couple of years. Poor guy. Terrible news. Quote

I bloody loved Dawsons Creek when I was younger, and we all laughed at his cry face, but he was a big reason the show was such a success. He was also really funny in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and very decent in Rules Of Attraction. That absolutely sucks. Quote

Best known for playing Harold in Hal Ashby's Harold and Maude, he was in a bunch of other stuff, including Brewster McCloud and Dogma. He was so good as Harold, though. DavidB6937 Posted February 11 Posted February 11 James Van Der Beek is, completely unironically, one of the most upsetting losses for me and genuinely one of my favourite actors. Teen dramas were absolutely one of my guilty pleasures when I was younger and is it any real surprise that I loved the movie obsessed Dawson? Of course not. I can't even think of how many times I've rewatched the series. One of my comfort watches, giving me hope that one day I could find success and love too - although hopefully slightly less complicated! I can't explain the pull of American teen dramas exactly but there was something fascinating, emotional and somewhat beautiful about them in that particular time period. Quite innocent in many ways. You certainly dont get the same shows anymore. As mentioned by others, Apartment 23 was an underrated gem and James had a lot of fun with his role in that. Definitely worth a watch if it's available anywhere. The legacy he leaves as Dawson - meme and all - is an impact on so many people growing up. But more than that, over the years it was such a pleasure to see the love for his family on social media. He was clearly a devoted father and husband and was determined to fight until the end. My thoughts are with his children ans family. Cancer is a cunt. Quote

deathrey Posted February 11 Posted February 11 I think for most of my generation, Dawson's Creek was a big part of their TV viewing. I wasn't a fan of the show but still knew most the storylines and what was going because our TV watching choices after school were limited and Channel 4 was where it's at. For that reason this really does feel like a huge loss. He had been so unwell since his diagnosis, it was almost painful to see photos of him looking so gaunt. He leaves behind a very young family which makes it even more tragic. He'll live on in many of our memories no doubt as well as in one of the most famous memes in the world. R.i.p James. What a shit fortnight, first Catherine O'Hara and now James Van Der Beek. Both from the same form of cancer too I think. Quote

I hated that towards the end of the show’s run they turned him into a proper arrogant prick as prior to the big Joey/Pacey blow up, he was one of the nice guys of TV Quote
