Paid Members Lorne Malvo Posted January 7, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 7, 2025 Booker T is shite, but he'll always have a place in my heart for his commentating Sin Cara's unmasking as if he was some hideous disgusting monster and not just some normal bloke. Quote

I go back and forth on him, mainly because of what Gooshy says: 1 minute ago, LaGoosh said: He's very good at calling matches but very bad at calling angles/story moments. I don't know how much of it is him trying to get all that shit in on a fast-moving program but I think his direction is often off on selling what matters to the outcome of matches and angles and not whether the two have had four matches in PWG back when they were coming up together. He's brilliant at selling the drama in-match but I want someone slowing him down so he can sell everything else. As a pure play by play, they need to get shot of Skiavone first. I love hearing Tony but he's not been an effective PBP for 30 years and still isn't. Keep him in his Mean Gene role. Quote
Paid Members Chris B Posted January 7, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 7, 2025 Different horses for different courses. I find Nigel McGuinness on commentary like nails on a chalkboard. Really can't stand him most of the time. Whereas I still find Excalibur/Schiavone/Taz like listening to a podcast I really like while watching wrestling, which is about the level I want most of the time. I haven't seen Excalibur as particularly bad on the angles either, tbf. Quote
Paid Members Lorne Malvo Posted January 7, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 7, 2025 (edited) I really like Excalibur, Nigel and Taz, I like Schiavone in a three-man booth but not as much in a two-man. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I'm really starting to dislike Riccaboni on ROH. His commentary has really grated on me the past few months. Dark Order came out a few weeks back for a standard tag match and he went 'Wow!!!' like there had just been a major title change or something. He's one of those guys who just makes noise apropos of nothing. Edited January 7, 2025 by Lorne Malvo Quote
Paid Members Lion_of_the_Midlands Posted January 7, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 7, 2025 From my POV Excalibur is worse at angles than me playing snooker (Highest break 21) and his commentary is nearly OK but nowhere near good enough to be in the announcers booth on a worldwide TV broadcast. As Chris Bey Bey says it is very much horses for courses but he's not for me. I like Taz and I agree with Tiggerr that Tony is best in a Mean Gene style role. Quote

There was a great moment early in AEW when Abadon was making her entrance and JR was all in "Good god, look at this woman! She's terrifying!" mode and Excalibur kept trying to do his usual schtick of running through his preprepared notes of all the matches she had recently won on Dark and Dark Elevation or whatever until JR loudly says "Who cares about all that? Look at this hideous monster!" and you can hear Excalibur getting flustered as he doesn't know what to do and tries going back to his notes and JR just interrupts him again as soon as he starts. It was very interesting to see a veteran TV announcer schooling a rookie live on air. I think that moment kind of summed up Excalibur's announcing style. Luckily I think Tony Schiavone is excellent at selling angles/moments so covers for Excalibur. Quote

Saying that I have no idea what he's like these days. He’s fucking shit. Like a modern day Lord Alfred Hayes without the charm. Constantly messing up names and just rambling. It’s impossible to watch NXT with any enjoyment for even the good stuff. Quote
Vamp Posted January 7, 2025 Posted January 7, 2025 At least none of them have aged as badly as Joey Styles in ECW. Yeah, I said it. Quote

Yeah, you did say it, most would agree. Much like how we all came around to Lex Luger being genuinely better than he was because we were blinded by opinion, Styles was the reverse, heralded in his day, on the rewatch, he's genuinely annoying. Impressive he carries a broadcast solo mind, but it's rose tinted stuff. Edited January 7, 2025 by Chili Quote
