andrew "the ref" coyne Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 So I think a few people here are unaware how AEW medical works vs WWE (according to Wrestling Observer anyway). In WWE they handle everything, including having ultimate say on which doctor you see. AEW however work differently; they allow their talent to manage their own medical affairs (choose their own doctors for example) and then AEW reimburse them after the fact. Pro and cons with both systems, and I imagine one favours some talent and other favours other talent. Obviously no idea what happened in regards to Pheonix, but just laying out the official line as some seem unaware. Quote
Paid Members Supremo Posted December 10, 2024 Paid Members Posted December 10, 2024 I hope Fenix really pushes the boat out and accuses Tony Khan of his worst crime. Putting Continental Classic matches on Rampage, forcing me to watch that show. Quote
Chili Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 Tony Khan feeds beefburgers to swans. - Rey Fenix on Chris Van Vliet's podcast. Quote
andrew "the ref" coyne Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 (edited) There is something insanely petty about blocking a talent to work GCW, but then allowing another talent to do a run in on their main event, in a angle that features the guy who caused all the turmoil. Ive experienced shit like this myself so thats helped solidify a certain opinion in my head of Tony Khan. Edited December 15, 2024 by andrew "the ref" coyne Quote
Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted January 6, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 6, 2025 ALLEGEDLY this decision had nothing to do with AEW or everyone’s favourite Canine Fondler, but it’s not a good look. https://411mania.com/wrestling/chris-charlton-reportedly-suspended-by-njpw/ Quote
Paid Members tiger_rick Posted January 6, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 6, 2025 Not a good look for AEW or Khan when it's nothing to do with them? The guy talked shit about an important corporate partner. Surprised he wasn't fired. He's certainly a moron. Dog fondler? Fucking hell. Quote

Reading further reports, and learning about Japanese Business culture, it’s an absolute faux pas and you’re correct, I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t end up getting the sack, or the suspension possibly gives him the opportunity to quit instead. He was also previously a broadcast partner with Kevin Kelly for NJPW, and maybe his anger towards AEW in general was tied into it? At first it could have been seen as petty to be suspended, but when you think about the fact you are publicly shitting on a company who has co-produced this event, and who co-produce other shows throughout the year, saying shit like that, without prompting is dumb dumb dumb. Also: Spoiler Yeah I felt dirty saying that. But you know, I have such a bad rep for being an AEW fan, I wanted to try and fit in. I won’t do that again. Thanks for the public shaming, it was deserved. Quote
organizedkaos Posted January 7, 2025 Posted January 7, 2025 Also, you know, there probably has to be some accountability and authority in any professionally run company even creative ones. If I did anything publicly relating to my job you'd absolutely assume I'd run it past higher ups, even if I thought it the best option creatively for me to do that. Simple as. Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted January 7, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 7, 2025 Even if he weren't shitting on a corporate partner, he's an announcer going into business for himself and making up storylines like he was Oliver Humperdink on NJPW tapes for Eurosport. I'd be pissed off at him enough for that. The story of Wrestle Dynasty was a co-promotion, not an interpromotional rivalry. Nothing about the AEW/NJPW relationship has ever been presented as adversarial. He was confusing as hell in the Omega/Kidd match by trying to make it about how Omega, the babyface returning from life-threatening illness, was a turncoat who abandoned NJPW, while the mouthy heel Gabe Kidd was standing up for NJPW's honour. He'd deserve a slap on the wrist for fucking up his job that badly, even if he weren't actively insulting a company that NJPW need to play nice with. Quote
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted January 7, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 7, 2025 Regardless of all this nonsense, he's a very bad announcer so probably deserves sacking without all that shite. Quote
Paid Members Chris B Posted January 7, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 7, 2025 It's worth remembering that this was basically their second night of WrestleKingdom and they desperately needed AEW to have that happen at all - as @BomberPat said in that thread, they may have booked it before Okada went offski. But NJPW currently has so few draws that a second night of WrestleKingdom without AEW would have been a disaster. (I was already surprised how much lower the ticket sales were for night 2, but apparently, Jan 4th is a big public holiday in Japan, so it's historically been the bigger night when they've done two anyway - so this was still pretty good by current standards). There are plenty of bad announcers who have been employed for long periods I'd happily back you to go and scythe them down Gooshy. Start with Corey Graves, Excalibur, and Booker. Quote

Start with Corey Graves, Excalibur, and Booker. I actually kind of enjoyed Booker T's commentary on Smackdown back in the day (mid 2010's I think?) because it was so bonkers. Rambling on about his "fave 5" each week (which was often more than 5 people), saying complete bollocks like "Shucky ducky quack quack" when someone hit a big move or just coming out with completely baffling stuff like during the two Sin Cara's angle where he said knew who the real one was because he saw some dirt on his boot. Saying that I have no idea what he's like these days. Edited January 7, 2025 by LaGoosh Quote
