Needless to say I zipped through it and absolutely loved it! Watched Amandaland first series straight after and then had a little wait till series 2 but watched all that in a couple of nights too. It's got Nick Offerman, Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer and Nicole Kidman, and it's a really good series. I think Nick Offerman is very good in most of his things, but him as Jinx, the faded wrestler grandfather is really good. Quote
Paid Members JLM Posted June 5 Paid Members Posted June 5 (edited) I’m still thoroughly enjoying Widow’s Bay, some great laughs and it does the homages to all the classic horror tropes so well without veering into lazy parody. Matthew Rhys and his facial reactions are stellar, Stephen Root is always excellent and I’ve been made an instant fan of Kate O’Flynn. I think she’s my favourite part of the show despite stiff competition from the other two I mentioned. The most recent episode (8) was my favourite one, Spoiler As a massive Halloween fan, seeing Patricia being a world class final girl was superb, and all of the scenes of her pointing the shotgun at the Myers/Vorhees monster’s head up to and including the shot of his incinerated remains were hilarious. So many preventable deaths in so many slashers if people would only see it through like that. Edited June 6 by JLM Quote

Stephen Root convinced me to stick with it and I've fallen in love with Patricia, she's ace. The best part of it was turning on the first episode and asking my wife why she'd been watching it with audio description on. She replied "Wait, you can hear that too?" Turns out she thought she'd gotten too drunk and had been hallucinating what she was watching as a description in her head for the first four episodes. Quote
DavidB6937 Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Finally got around to watching Half Man on iPlayer. Got through the lot this weekend. Barely knew anything about it beyond the cast. Fuck me. Intense and bleak would be putting it mildly but what a ride. Great performances, and the younger lads did a brilliant job of carrying the first half of the series. Think they did just enough to keep it from being too much. Oddly funny in places too when you don't expect it. Quote
Mr_Danger Posted June 17 Posted June 17 (edited) I’m glad Widows Bay found its feet again after a bit of a patchy mid section, owing in no small part to Patricia becoming a bigger part of the plot. She’s great and the actress playing her is like a Tim Burton version of Alison Brie. Matthew Rhys’ manic impression of the mayor from Jaws carried it through the early episodes but I hope they lean in to the ensemble a bit more going forward. We stuck with it after what were a couple of alright early episodes, but it really picked up once they moved to the adult versions of the characters (no disrespect to the younger actors at all, they were really good). The final 20 minutes or so of the 4th episode was utterly fantastic though. An incredible scene that was everything that Adolescence thought it was but was nowhere near Quote

Hopefully after the success of this season they will have a bit more time to flesh out the characters some more, as I think it would be all the better for it. The Boroughs on Netflix has been cancelled after one season too. It was getting great reviews everywhere, but I must just be a grumpy guy these days as I thought it was very average Netflix stuff. A good cast and a good premise for a show, but it just wasn't that good I thought. There's a line between teasing stuff for too long, and then doing what this show did and throwing it all out there within 2 episodes, to which the characters don't even seem that arsed about the stuff they've seen. To continue my grumpy streak, the newest season of The Four Seasons was distinctly average too. Heard they are bringing it back for another season too, which is surely the definition of diminishing returns. Quote

Mr_Danger Posted June 18 Posted June 18 The thing that did it for The Boroughs for me was Gina Davis and the Mexican lad. Fair enough if they just boned the odd couple of times, she looks good for her age and he’s a good looking chap who probably just wanted to see what it would be like but I’m not buying a full blown romance. It’s a good one and done anyway so not too bothered about the cancellation and I enjoyed the Cocoon vibe I got from the show but don’t desire to see where the story goes. Quote

I spent a lot of time tutting at Will Forte, who I don't like, which means the writing and other performances weren't making up for him as much this series. I'd still watch another. Quote

Nah, I didn't think it was much cop either. An easy watch, but one where they didn't appear to have a clue what they were doing after episode 4. I found some of the character motivations absolutely baffling at points as well. Quote
