Kids are either super happy with the weird timetable or hate it as they have subjects bulked together. For example, my form group have 5 hours of maths on a Friday and nothing else. English on Thursdays is broken by 1 hour of PE. I see them for 2 hours on a Wednesday to break up science and then the other two days they're doing humanities subjects or tech/art/music with no equipment for practical work. I spend that much time going between zones, I'm starting to think I work in the fucking Crystal Maze. I'm waiting for Richard O'Brien to lock me in the Aztec Zone. Kids are allowed to go to the toilet whenever so its like a constant cycle of teenagers leaving a room. So I repeat myself every 5 minutes for whoever has just come back. Half of them don't have masks, some are constantly messing with masks, I have to wear an impractical visor if a kid needs help requiring me to leave the little 2m square around the desk (which doesn't cover the area with the board for some rooms). No confirmed cases as of yet, but with so many off I think its just a matter of time,. The primary school which is our main feeder school has had 2 confirmed cases in children and one member of staff, so it's very openly in the community Oh, and I had to actually have a conversation with my form this week about why they should be washing their hands after going to the toilet. deathrey Posted September 20, 2020 Share Posted September 20, 2020 (edited) My school have had a record number of Elective Home Education requests in just two weeks (we usually have one a year, I took 7 requests on Wedneday and Friday). I'm doing a lot of the safeguarding and absence calls as I'm working from home and list is doubling every day. Lots of kids with symptoms and very few tests available. A smattering of fakers but most seem to genuinely be showing some type of symptoms - though it's more than likely the usual beginning of term cold but without a negative test, we have to tell them to isolate. That's interesting @LariatTom, ours are not really allowed to the toilet during lesson time. If they want to go, they have a note in their planner saying they have been and aren't allowed to go in a lesson again for the rest of the day (unless they have a medical expemption). We have a pastoral desk on every corridor and if they are allowed to go to the toilet, they are escorted by the member of staff on duty and reminded to wash their hands.... Edit: Masks are mandatory in my area at the moment so students are wearing them outside of lessons. I've been told compliance has been really high. deathrey Posted September 20, 2020 Share Posted September 20, 2020 I think it depends their age, in Primary it's fair enough, they struggle to hold it in but high school kids can and some will constantly take the piss with it and do which is why we started noting it in planners. Typically, they would need a toilet pass because they've got medical exemption. At the moment though, the idea behind it is that if we allow more pupils to go during lesson time, less will need to go at break/lunch and minimise the number trying to use them at the busiest time. They need to wear a face mask if they're going out and can only go to the block in their zone. It seems to be working, just means I'm constantly repeating myself. He's trying to balance medical science with issues that are absolutely not his concern (schools, pub closures, the economy etc). If he thinks a full lockdown is essential (not saying he currently does), that should be his advice and nothing more. If he lacks the guts to do that, he shoud step aside. His job is not to try and balance science with government wishes. Personally, I would have locked it down on the 7th. We're travelling in entirely the wrong direction & once again, not reacting anywhere near quickly enough. As for those who continue to disobey the guidance and rules (and trust me I'm not a rule-taker, by nature), you really are cunts. These half arsed lockdowns are going to fail, I know a good few people who have taken the approach of "so I can go to the pub with strangers surrounding me but not see my family, fuck that." People are seemingly making their own social bubbles regardless of the rules as everyone is so sick of a spineless government who cannot be trusted to wipe their own arses (probably standers). I don't agree with bending the rules to suit your own narrative but it's bloody easy to see why people are utterly exhausted by it all. The Tories response to the virus has been a joke since the beginning but, coming out of lockdown has probably been the worst of the entire ordeal. Firstly, case numbers were around the same level when they lifted restrictions as they were when we went into lockdown, which is insane. They not only did still did it but they tried to put pressure on the devolved Governments to follow suit, and encouraged people to travel the country. Aside from that, it's only been about two weeks since they were bribing folk to go to restaurants and trying to guilt people into stopping working from home. What the fuck did they think was going to happen? The big concern is whether people will even obey a second lockdown and, for me personally, whether I'll still have a job. I work in a hotel. We lost an ungodly amount of money from being closed. Same. I will say that I like Nicola Sturgeon but our version of the rule of six is particularly shit. Limiting gatherings to six people from two households disproportionately hurts people who live alone and means people are less likely to follow it. I can think of so many flaws in it - I can work for twelve hours with three work colleagues but we can't go for a pint afterwards? - that it's impossible to really take it seriously. As I am absolutely done with this country and its government. I’m not spending the next two years of my life going in and out of these pissing lockdowns because the Tories did too little, too late to contain it, and I don’t fancy taking my chances with their “herd immunity” plan-but-definitely-not-the-plan due to medical reasons.
