Paid Members LaGoosh Posted May 22, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted May 22, 2020 I read an article by a psychologist yesterday about how the new working from home model will also have a massive effect on decreasing workplace bullying and office politics. Harder to bullshit your way to the top or bitch about people in the staff kitchen when you're barely ever in the same room together. Top banks and financial institutions are already planning to reduce office sizes.

I've already seen both of these happen in the short time we've been in a home working model by people who did it in the office too.

It's the same people just different systems. Lots of personal Zoom calls and select email chains.
Paid Members Bus Surfer Posted May 22, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted May 22, 2020 I'm expecting our workplace to enforce home working also. We're already working from home 1-2 days per week before Covid, and we're due to be moving into a much smaller office come December. The new office has a ratio of 2 desks to 5 people, and a load of those wanky new meeting/collaboration areas for people to work on the fly and hot desk all day. This seems completely against what the government is proposing as the new normal, and as a government department ourselves it just looks like a massive waste of money now.
wordsfromlee
I’d give it seven minutes before that all those guidelines go out the window. Edited May 22, 2020 by wordsfromlee
Paid Members Tommy! Posted May 22, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted May 22, 2020 If they are opening does that mean other pubs will be / could be too? Getting in the pub is the only thing I miss.

Why pay huge rents on premises when they can pay a chunk of their staff's internet/electricity bills and have everyone work from home. The staff can claim more of their utility bills back against their tax(I think they can anyway, I do but I'm classes as a contractor, so not sure if it's the same for employed people). This will be the crucial bit that I hope @PunkStep's employers have factored in.  If you want people to WFH I think you should contribute to their internet/electricity bills, and also supply them with all the equipment they need. A lot of people will be using their own PCs etc which is fine for an emergency but not for permanent imo.

My company has paid for/sent out equipment to everyone who needs it, but I'd be surprised if they began paying internet and energy bills, just as it not tangible and a bit of a grey area in terms of what was used on company time. Not many workplaces pay for travel either, though I'm sure some do. I've saved tonnes more in travel that I've spent in electricity. The hardest thing at the moment is it's incredibly difficult to train anyone. Working over teams/skype etc does work, but it slows down the process so much. A colleague started the week before we were all sent home (beginning of March) and she's knowledge wise where I'd expect someone to be after just a month, not two.

King Pitcos
Work will be weird without the office culture permanently. The camaraderie that comes from being imprisoned with people for 8 hours a day won’t really be there anymore. There are people I sit near in the office that I get on well with, but not enough to talk to much outside of work and our roles don’t involve frequent contact while wfh. New starters may not even meet their own teammates until the Christmas do, if they’re still going to be a thing. Leaving speeches will be even more awkward. On the equipment frontI’ve been using my own laptop to work during lockdown. It’s scary because I’m using MS Teams via web browser outside of the work virtual machine, so whenever I have to share my screen I have to broadcast a couple of seconds of my real life computer before clicking into Citrix. So I end up having to close tabs of porn/wrestling/song lyrics. Also my laptop is a bit knackered, some of the keys are wonky and the webcam only works sometimes and never well. My manager told me the other day she’s made up a lie to our director that I’ve been borrowing a broken laptop from my housemate so far but I need to give it back, and ordered me that I’m to go along with the lie so that work will give me a laptop. Whenever they do reopen my office in the next few weeks, it’ll be with the standard measures in place - half capacity, distancing, sanitiser etc. But I still don’t want to go in. It takes absolutely ages on public transport and I cannot be fucked with commuting for hours a day rather than just rolling over in bed. In my favour, I’m a bit of an at-risk because I am a big fat cunt with sleep apnea (untreated - got diagnosed in Feb and my follow-up appointment has been postponed several times and now cancelled, I guess because Covid has taken all the lung unit slots), and I wouldn’t be surprised if I’ve got undiagnosed diabetes. Also, the computers at work don’t have cameras, so the office is less equipped for meetings than my shitty laptop is. BUT, I am definitely the kind of workshy waster that Chris B referenced. At least one or two days this week, I snoozed through the afternoon. Do they have to let me keep wfh if I’m not comfortable going in to the office?
