Paid Members IANdrewDiceClay Posted October 6, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted October 6, 2020 (edited) The best, man. Reinvented the way you play guitar. The fact that there is a whole genre of music of people thinking they are as good as him says it all. Even KISS brought in a speed guitarist just to bite off his act (and ultimately got rid when his hands swelled up.) westlondonmist
When I was a kid I listened to 90s teen "punk" music. I then discovered Van Halen and thought what the fuck am I listening too. These other guys can't play guitar for shit. Made me look into other 80s metal bands. This man was so talented that his guitar playing hid how shit David Lee Roth is.
Paid Members Thunderplex Posted October 6, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted October 6, 2020 A true legend.  Pure rock and roll.  Sadly, Jump will be being played as a tribute most places.  Here’s a proper one.
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted October 6, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted October 6, 2020 Heck of a musician, and a heck of a band. Terrible loss. Cancer is horrible.

Bluesy, yet quite heavy. Edited October 6, 2020 by westlondonmist
WyattSheepMask
Jump is a fucking great tune. Granted, it’ll be the only Van Halen song that the majority of people know, but that doesn’t take away from it being a great song
Moderators neil Posted October 6, 2020 Moderators Share Posted October 6, 2020 I think Mean Street is one of the finest examples of Eddie's playing, a sick riff, eye melting solo, and great use of dynamics in the latter parts: Â
Paid Members I Bent My Wookie Posted October 6, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted October 6, 2020 I've cried my eyes out at Eddie. Like I'm honestly fucking broke inside. It was the band of my youth and the artist I loved and I really just feel sick knowing how much he hurt.
Paid Members Surf Digby Posted October 7, 2020 Paid Members Share Posted October 7, 2020 I've known about his throat cancer (and his theories behind it) for years, but it still hit me out the blue. He pretty much created the template for how guitar playing was going to go in the 80s, and he was ripped off not only as a guitarist, but for his keyboard riffs too. The fact that so many guitar heroes cite him as their guitar hero - even ones from the same era - says it all. I don't have a Frankenstein guitar, but I do have this bad boy... Keith Houchen
Apart from his playing, what stood out for me with Eddie Van Halen was his huge dorky grin. In a world where super serious guitarists gurned away like they’d left a big smelly poo on their guitar and occasionally caught a whiff of it, here was a better player with a huge smile on his face having a great time and sharing his love and enthusiasm.
