Paid Members BomberPat Posted November 5, 2020 Paid Members Posted November 5, 2020 Yeah, I don't think it matters that Kingston's gear is shit. His whole act is that he's been slumming it on the indies just to get by, he shouldn't have fancy new gear - it wouldn't be that character's priority to look great for TV, and it wouldn't make sense for the character to be able to afford to anyway. He's been low-key one of the best talkers in wrestling for years - I thought I was a late convert when I got into him after King of Trios 2011, because the CHIKARA fanbase had been singing his praises for years and I hadn't "got it". Seeing other people go through the same realisation now is superb, and it's a big break he really deserves, and has done for years. He's always been believable - his run as CHIKARA Grand Champion I think is absolutely essential viewing, both in-ring and for the promos - but since the NWA run he's just on another level. Something I point out to people when I praise his promos since then is to always look at his eyes when he's talking - there's not even the suggestion that he doesn't believe every single thing he's saying, or that he's trying to remember his lines.
The Cutting Edge Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 I only issue I have with Kingston gear and look is there's other guys on the roster that look shit but he looks worse, I get his character but simply dropping the shit singlet for a tank top would suit his street thug gimmick, not saying he's not believable in the role. Guess part of the issue is so many guys wear non traditional ring gear it's hard to stand out, Raven for example looked legit and stood out cos he was only one doing it (more so wcw than ecw)

Its funny you mention his eyes Pat as my only problem with Kingstons promos were he would often glance to the left and would take me right out of it. This was years ago though during his CZW days. It was something DJ Hyde did aswell.

That camel clutch finisher looks terrible, John Cenas STFU looked more menacing. Trent was moving his head freely while Miro had it locked in. The online promo between Trent / Miro / Excalibur was brilliant, I really enjoyed it, but this segment just fell short for me. Taz is knocking it out of the park with the promos these days, he's great. However, I just don't believe that Cage or Starks are big deals. Tony Khan is getting mentioned a lot lately, he was mentioned in the Omega, Taz and Vikki segments, I give it 6 months to a year before he's an on screen personality. Agreed on Miro, he's not working for me. I thought he'd come to AEW and knock it out of the park, but he's not even close to clicking yet. That said, Brodie Lee wasn't great at first and now he's one of the best acts in AEW. Time is on Miro's side. As far as Cage goes I can take him or leave him, but I completely disagree about Starks. Every time he picks up a mic he oozes star quality. I thought his ceiling was far lower than it actually is before he joined AEW, he has what it takes to become a top star for this company. As for Tony Khan, he's been mentioned on Dynamite since the early days of this company. I don't think him being mentioned on screen is an indication of anything. The Kingston segment was fantastic but I don't think it's a good idea to put the belt on him. He's certainly proving his worth as a top level performer for AEW, but I think moving away from Moxley at this stage would be a mistake. I suspect the plan is to put the belt on Kenny Omega but at this stage I'm not even sure that's the way to go. For me, Moxley's time as AEW champion has been the best babyface title run I've seen in my time watching wrestling. You always here, when it comes to babyfaces, "the chase" is better than the actual title run but for Moxley the opposite has been true. I didn't particularly want to see Jericho drop the title at the time as he'd been great, but who could argue against that decision now given how good Moxley is every single week? He feels like an absolute megastar. I absolutely love reading @Supremo's fantastically written posts and @DavidB6937 is my wrestling poster of the year by a country mile and it's incredibly rare that I disagree with them, but I still feel Kingston would benefit from wearing something else to the ring, I'm not sure I can't be persuaded otherwise. For me his get-up takes away from the intimidation factor he absolutely radiates when he's wearing his street clothes in talking segments like this one. Whatever the case, Full Gear is looking incredibly exciting and I can't wait to see what unfolds.
Tennessee Moltisanti Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 (edited) I got goosebumps during that Kingston and Moxley segment. Those 2 have to be the 2 best promo guys in the business for a long time. Brilliant build for the match as well, AEW does a great job of leaving big matches open in terms of winners. cobra_gordo Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 I don't think anybody's mentioned it yet but how great was the Hangman/ Omega hype video with Cinderella's "Don't Know What You've Got Til It's Gone"? It was like the power ballad equivalent of the Rock/ Austin "My Way" package. Loved it. The audio issues when going from the arena to a video package are still horrendous to the point that you can't hear the first thirty seconds of some of the talking heads segments because of the ridiculous amount of echo.

Ah yeah, I was going to mention that, it's been a problem for me for the past month or so. Any idea if this is a weird Fite TV quirk, or if it's a problem on TNT/ITV? Given how irritating it is the lack of people complaining about it has been surprising.
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted November 5, 2020 Paid Members Posted November 5, 2020 (edited) A very average show but with the election no one in America will be watching anyway so not surprised they had a half-arsed card. Moxley and Kingston might actually have to kill eachother to meet the hype on this match. Both men have pulled blinders in the buildup. I'm expecting and hoping for a Moxley win. He's the best babyface champion in wrestling in years. His character is very refreshing and satisfying, and heels don't really lose anything by getting beat by him because he's been pushed successfully as the highest level competitor. I'd like Kingston & Friends to move onto a big feud with the Nightmare Family after this. Kingston vs Dustin Rhodes...yes please. The audio echo issue seems to be getting worse every week, they need to sort that shit out. Also after having all my fingers crossed that AEW would bring in Miro I kind of wish they hadn't bothered now. He just doesn't feel like a good fit and I don't really know what they can do with him. poetofthedeed Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 "if I don't win, I don't know what I've got other than this glass of whisky" Hangman you beautiful pure bastard.....

That would be an amazing brawl, and the promos would be incredible - Kingston cutting promos on old-timers is always fun. I can't see Kingston winning, but I also can't see them actually having him say "I Quit". I don't want them to Mankind/The Rock their way out of it, but I think they have to find a way to protect Kingston, and keep up his righteous indignation of being overlooked or screwed over when he feels he has the moral high ground. It's become such a driving force for his character.
The Cutting Edge Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Just listened to Miro on Jericho podcast, mostly what you'd expect from both, blowing smoke up the arse of AEW for getting to do whatever they want, which is fair enough but so far hasn't worked for Miro. They put over the "brass ring up your ass" promo Like it was Dusty level promo genius despite being done by ever ex wwe guy for years. Miro should be mixing it as a face against Team Taz for example not in a comedy team
DavidB6937 Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Fuck me. I've enjoyed Kingston's work over the years but jeez that was absolutely another level. Might just be my favourite thing to ever happen in AEW up to this point. Do I expect him to win? Hell no. They really need to protect him in defeat though because they've got something special there and they really shouldn't waste it. Obviously if this was WWE then he'd be forgotten about by next week and he'd sink back into nothingness, but I have a little faith in AEW that someone's watching and realising how fucking great he is. He's just so natural and real. Many have tried to replicate that kind of thing but because he's lived it and been through so much it's just so intense and emotional. And he's not even a guy that only delivers on the mic. His match style might not be to everyone's tastes but he's capable of putting on absolutely compelling storytelling in ring too. I hope he doesn't get lost in the shuffle. AEW's a really tough one at the moment because there are so many things in motion and so much top tier talent but they really do need to get behind him somehow going forward, not just a short feud with Mox.
Mr Butternut Squash Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Even my wrestling hating five year old finally dropped the PS4 pad and was transfixed by the Eddie Kingston segment. Incredible. Kingston/Moxley and Tazz's crew are the only things I care about right now. All this 'shades of grey' bollocks is beyond tedious.
Chili Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 I have an AEW watch party every week with a non wrestling mate to keep sane, she is vaguely into it because they're keen on Orange Cassidy and Hangman. She's always dropping in on Eddie Kingston that he feels like something from a completely different show and he feels real to the point of completely dangerous.
Paid Members Nick James Posted November 5, 2020 Paid Members Posted November 5, 2020 I should really clarify my comments on Ricky Starks. Brian Cage I don't feel i need to elaborate on, he just comes across as an overly muscular guy acting like he's a cruiser, I don't think he could be anything other than a monster of the week type, I am happy to be proven wrong. However, Ricky Starks at the moment, i don't feel like he's a big deal, as outside of the Darby Allen feud, there's not a lot he has done other than hang about in the background while Taz kills it with his promos. I fully agree, the guy oozes charisma, i mean, just listen to him when he is on comms on Dark, he's brilliant. He has potential, but at the moment, the Team Taz thing just feels like it is there. Same with Lance Archer, that guys aura was unquestionable when he arrived, but he again, had a monster of the month feud with Mox (granted he had to quarantine which took the steam away) he's not done a lot other than sit in the crowd attempting to look menacing. That guy should not be sitting in the crowd like the rest of them.
