Paid Members mim731 Posted May 31, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted May 31, 2019 I get what @Carbomb is saying about simplifying it, because it was the convoluted entrances that made it messy. I'd have them just have all twenty men in the ring rather than entering in fives, and then the "joker" could enter at a time of their choosing. So it could be at the start, when there is one guy left, or whatever their character dictates.
Paid Members tiger_rick Posted May 31, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted May 31, 2019 Just now, Carbomb said: More people doesn't make things "more complicated". The rules are what make it complicated. Was the Greatest Royal Rumble difficult to understand? It's easy to explain: take a card, you enter the Rumble in the place that responds to the card. Simply have the announcer announce each one "2 of Clubs!" "5 of Diamonds!" "Jack of Spades!" Or, better still, just don't bother. All people need to know is that a wrestler picked a card, and that determined the number they came in at. Only one they need to know about in particular is the guy who drew the Joker. You're not selling me on it! I didn't think the concept was that difficult. Just a bit pointless, if we're honest, and not something you want to start your first ever show explaining. if it was a few months down the line and you could build it on TV, it's not that hard. The other problem I had with it was the lack of early eliminations. Get the no-marks in and out quickly and ensure you can give full focus to the spots and eliminations so they're not muddied with the arrival of five guys at once. Agree with @BomberPat comment earlier. This wasn't all-time bad. TNA have done 100 worse matches.
Paid Members Accident Prone Posted May 31, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted May 31, 2019 They should've done it 'Snap' style, with each person choosing a card and you can only eliminate someone with the same suit or colour as yourself. Then it's a free-for-all when all the 'cards' are unique. I know you're reading this thread Kenny, just fucking do it.
Paid Members BomberPat Posted May 31, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted May 31, 2019 The timed entrances would have worked better if there was more star power in the match. It's the equivalent of the "fart at a funeral" crowd response when the Royal Rumble clock ticks down, and the next entrant is Don Harris. A dramatic countdown to an underwhelming reveal is never going to make for compelling TV.
Paid Members Chris B Posted May 31, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted May 31, 2019 I seem to be the only one who doesn't have an issue with how they did it. It avoids having everyone at the start, and people getting lost. And it's not a full-on (WWE copyrighted, probably) Rumble. So another five entrants every few minutes seems pretty straightforward to me, and the joker entrant is a nice touch. The only bum-note for me was the 22nd entry, although I have now decided that Orange Cassidy is the greatest thing ever in wrestling, so I'm giving it a pass for that. (Why wasn't he just one of the 21, but couldn't be arsed coming out earlier?)

He was sat on a chair at ringside for ages before he got into the ring, with Bryce Remsburg trying to convince him to get in. That not being made clear is another failure of the production/presentation. The King of Old School
I could have misheard it but didn't the commentators reference him to being the 22nd entry too?

The concept itself wasn't difficult, I agree, but if people wanted it a bit simpler while still keeping to the casino theme, I reckon that would be the way to do it. If I was the announcer, I'd be saying something like: "Everybody in the locker room took a card. One by one, they're gonna come out every two minutes. First the Clubs, then the Diamonds, then the Hearts, then the Spades. But watch out - the Joker's wild! Whoever gets that gets to come in whenever they want and cause some mayhem when no-one expects it!" Like I say, they don't even have to announce the card of the guy coming out - the crowd doesn't need to know, really. All they need to know is that's the order the promotion worked out from the deck. Anyway, just be glad nobody's thinking of doing a Tarot-themed one, with fourteen per suit and a load of Major Arcana cards to boot.
Paid Members Chris B Posted May 31, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted May 31, 2019 They should base it on a cross between Hoover and 8 men down. Tag team partners have to declare their pairs, obviously. Then the winner stands up and shouts 'Go Johnny, Go Go Go Go!'.
Paid Members TheBurningRed Posted May 31, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted May 31, 2019 The battle royals at this years Wrestlemania were so instantly forgettable, the only thing I remember is the Braun/Harper/Ali spot. As are most in wwe. But even though the rules were silly for this one and production was bad, I remember a whole lot more and enjoyed more. MJF calling Dustin Lt. Dan and just being a star in general, Stunt and Janelas eliminations. Orange Cassidy, Luchasaurus and Sonny Kiss all stood out. Page doing the buckshot lariat. All these things were rememberable. And that’s what should matter. Battle Royals are never going to be classics. Can’t recall a single thing from the pre show singles match.
BrodyGraham
I didn't have a problem with the concept of the match or trouble following it. The problems were all production based. The botching of the second set of entrants and missing or cutting away from spots detracted from it for me. Otherwise there was enough stuff to enjoy and I've seen way worse battle royale matches in the past. As other people have mentioned I think the fact that I was familiar with most of the entrants helped and I imagine Meltzer seeing it live and not being party to some of the flubs on a TV level helped his enjoyment. I don't see 3 stars as egregious in that context.
Paid Members Hannibal Scorch Posted May 31, 2019 Paid Members Share Posted May 31, 2019 The Battle Royale I thought was pretty decent. It was the absolutely woeful Camera Work which ruined it for us watching at home
Guest
Have to remember tho, that’s the first match they have recorded and produced live. Think it’s worth giving it a pass on that alone
Mr Kennedy
I agree that the battle royale was a bit ‘TNA Russo’ but the difference is that it would have main evented a TNA PPV. Here it was a bit of fun on the pre show, with a satisfactory outcome.

It’s just one man’s opinion on how much he enjoyed a particular match. However, three stars for the Pre-show Battle Royal? What planet is he on?! Planet Meltzer. Odd place so it is. Not had time to read the full review yet, and I knew I was in the minority not liking the show, but I'm genuinely surprised at the number of positive poll responses in the observer.
