Facebook and WWE to launch LIVE in-ring series, Mixed Match Challenge, exclusively on Facebook Watch

Facebook and WWE today announced a new in-ring series, Mixed Match Challenge, that will stream live in the U.S. exclusively on Facebook on Tuesday nights beginning Jan.16 at 10 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. PT. The 12-episode series will air on Facebook Watch and feature WWE Superstars from both the Raw and SmackDown LIVE rosters competing in a single-elimination mixed tag-team tournament to win $100,000 to support the charity of their choice.

Each 20-minute episode will reflect a progressive approach to production, with elements optimized for mobile consumption, experimentation and social interaction, including the chance for the WWE Universe to engage with Superstars during the show. In addition, fans will have the opportunity to select matchups, match stipulations and more, on Facebook.

“As we continue to expand our strategic partnership with Facebook, this new series, Mixed Match Challenge, jointly reflects our innovative approach to content distribution and fan engagement,” said Michelle Wilson, WWE Chief Revenue & Marketing Officer. “This show will deliver the action and excitement our passionate fan base is accustomed to while offering new production elements and social experiences that only Facebook can provide.”

“As a leader in entertainment innovation, WWE is an ideal partner to demonstrate how the live sports viewing experience can be reimagined on Facebook Watch,” said Dan Reed, Facebook Head of Global Sports Partnerships. “Mixed Match Challenge is a new competition produced specifically to take advantage of the reach, interaction and ongoing engagement enabled by our platform. Fans will be able to directly influence and interact with the in-ring action, follow the rivalries and storylines in between events, and connect with one another as the drama unfolds. We're excited for the WWE community to broadcast on our platform to watch some of the biggest Raw and SmackDown Live Superstars and engage with WWE like never before.”

“Mixed Match Challenge demonstrates WWE’s flexibility in creating and producing compelling content across platforms in a media landscape that is evolving each day,” said Jayar Donlan, WWE Executive Vice President, Digital & Social Content. “The social interaction leading up to and during each show will connect WWE Superstars with our massive fan base on Facebook in more ways than ever before.”

That doesn't sound half bad; a good, classic tag series is always worth a watch. And fair play to WWE for trying something genuinely new that works with the newest media. This could turn out to be either spectacularly good, or super shite. Whilst Taboo Tuesday and Cyber Sunday ended up not being particularly good, I'd say that was probably because they were a bit ahead of their time; the fandom and internet interaction wasn't as developed technologically or culturally. Now that WWE have accustomised a large portion of their fanbase to online offerings in the form of the Network, it makes sense to try and push more interactive formats now, now that the customer base has the experience and engagement.

I think it clashes with 205 Live unless they have some other kind of show ready to go in that slot?

I'm astounded that anyone even watches 205 live, whether it be on the Network or staying on in the arena. What little I see from the division on Raw is even a complete struggle to get through.

If Neville comes back then I hope he gets put back in the mix with the main rosters as he's too good to be dragged down by the albatross that the label of 'Crusierweight' is.

I might have to start watching 205 Live next week if the rumours are true:

Rockstar Spud is slated to start work on the brand next week

When is Itami due to join them?

Itami debuts next week according to his vignette in this week’s show.

(yes, I’m the one who still watches it. Metalik and Kendrick had a decent match on there the other week, honest!)

They really need to add a third day of tapings at this rate. A smaller venue to tape 205, specials like this and maybe some NXT and whatever shite like Main Event they still do. The draw of a live RAW or SD show should be enough to get enough through the doors for a decent TV crowd and they should get a decent fan base in for the 3rd day of tapings if the arena size is sensible.
