RedTwoster Posted July 12 Posted July 12 I’m certainly not an ‘anyone but England’ type Scot, but I felt enormously sorry for Norway after that. I tend to gravitate towards the underdogs at this stage of the World Cup, and seeing them play so well yet come up short…they can feel hard done by for sure. I feel less invested in Tuchel’s England than Southgate’s (mainly because Southgate seemed like a really decent person) but there are a lot of decent people on this forum who would get a lot of joy out of England success. I really hope you get to experience that. Unless, of course, you come up against France, who I drew in the World Cup sweepstakes. Quote

In a match he didn’t play in. Proper “Didn’t want to win the World Cup anyway. Messi can’t win one of these” vibes. Quote

Paid Members johnnyboy Posted July 12 Paid Members Posted July 12 (edited) The Swiss complaining that the second yellow shouldn't have been given to Embolo due to the "mistaken identity" review is a take. "Our guy blatantly cheated, but as the ref gave a yellow card to the defender in realtime VAR shouldn't have exposed the preposterous dive that the ref missed." VAR has already been used for this new interpretation of "mistaken identity" this world cup, so it's not like Embolo or the Swiss have been singled out. The even more ridiculous thing is that the Swiss looked like they were holding their own when Embolo launched himself into orbit. Edited July 12 by johnnyboy Quote
Rossman Posted July 12 Posted July 12 Fell asleep during the 1st hydration break in the England / Norway game. Missed all the action. Woke up at half time, saw the score. Made the rational decision, to go to bed and start again in the morning. Woke up at 6:30. Put on ITV X. They had a 9 minute highlight package, but no replay of the whole match. Managed to find a 1080p download. Downloaded and watch the whole thing by the time ITV X had managed to get it on their streaming service. Also had Spanish commentary so didn't have to put up with Twatterface talking nonsense. We moan about the licence fee, but when it was England v Mexico and on later in the early hours of the morning. BBC had it up ready to go for those who didn't want to stay up. Quote
Paid Members Statto Posted July 12 Paid Members Posted July 12 The BBC also had a full England replay on iPlayer (presumably with Mowbray/Shearer commentary) by the time I went on to see the Switzerland/Argentina highlights at 7am. Quote

The even more ridiculous thing is that the Swiss looked like they were holding their own when Embolo launched himself into orbit. I've loved this World Cup. It's more than i've cared about football in ages, but the moaning about referees/howls of conspiracy are too much. Switzerland were robbed, say the Swiss. Egypt were robbed, say Egypt. Norway were robbed, say Norway. Djed Spence was robbed of a penalty and, actually, we might as well start getting cross about whatever decisions favour Messi in the semi, says a mate who i've annoyed by not agreeing. On VAR, specifically, everyone picking over the individual elements of VAR they don't like does my head in. It's either in or its not. If its in, it's not magic, it won't suddenly make everything perfect, it's still being managed by people with opinions and biases. If the discussion is 'should we get rid of VAR', great. But it's not, it's always just moaning about the specific bits that have annoyed people that day. Quote

The BBC had great vibes after the Mexico win, the Kane voice gone interview, them all buzzing, Kelly Cates. ITV had that fucking cunt Matterface badgering on over all the post game vibes and then Tuchel is brutally honest with Gabriel Clake and Leighton Baines grandad then tries to stir shit up with Bellingham about it. Lee Dixon was straight on Djed Spence as well when he came on. Another dickhead. Such a difference. Quote

It wasn't quite John Terry Full Kit for a trophy lift in a game he didn't play a single minute in Quote

Briefcase Posted July 13 Posted July 13 I think my main gripes about the World Cup other than the kick off times (which is going to happen because of the timezones) is more the play acting and deliberate attempts to waste time during penalties. Nearly every penalty given (in normal time and during some shoot outs) have had defending teams wasting time, delaying the kick, arguing about the penalty and then it taking 2-3 minutes for the pen to be taken, during pen shoot outs the first pen also seems to take ages between the opposing keeper messing about and the referee doing his thing to the point where if I won the coin toss I would probably go second on pens on the probability the first pen is missed because of all the messing around. Also as much as I love the rule about being sent off for whispering and covering your mouth, opposition players also need to be booked when they then imitate this to the referee trying to get someone sent off (similar to when players wave an imaginary card in the air to try get someone booked). Minor things that probably mean fuck all in the grand scheme of things but I have noticed them. Quote

Paid Members FLips Posted July 13 Paid Members Posted July 13 (edited) Agree with everything you say Briefcase. My least favourite “new” thing is because a precedent has been set for it, it feels like every goal now has the opposite team screaming about fouls in the build up because even the slightest knock is a black and white rule that gets the goal disallowed. I’m actually starting to miss the days where my biggest pet peeve was a bit of diving from some usual suspects. Edited July 13 by FLips Quote
Paid Members gmoney Posted July 14 Paid Members Posted July 14 France really looked like they just couldn't be arsed. Even with the keeper miles off his line they dithered until he managed to get back and block it. Baffling performance really. Quote
