They shipped several shots on goal leading up to that, and were looking shaky. It's not like the team weren't handling Argentina well before the defensive substitutions. Very stupid. Quote

Rule of Arteta you never take Rice off ever until he has to be carried off. Tough on to take considering how it happened. I thought we had them on a plate if we went for the kill. After all that is what we were promised. In the big games, deep in the tournament, the system allowed us to press our advantage and play. Kill the game. so honestly I just feel betrayed. That game management from the hydration break was worse than anything Southgate ever did. Absolutely unforgivable to think we could hold out. once they equalised, what was his plan? We had 6 defenders on the pitch. How would we ever score? I don’t even blame the players.
