We are definitely on the easier side of the bracket. Brazil haven’t looked great and might not get past Japan. Mexico would be a tough game, but we have the talent to beat them if we can somehow miraculously gel as a team.

We really need to play with a bit more energy/urgency though. We’ve had 9 shots on target in the last 2 games.

Brazil haven't looked consistent, but they also look like they've played within themselves in that group. When I watched them against Scotland I always felt like if they did decide to start properly playing they'd have given them an even bigger goal difference to worry about.

I only just found out Congo was Zaire. Now I feel dumb.

Anyhoo.

On the one hand, Americans not realising the offside goal causes more goals rather than prevents them is one thing. And it’s provoking me to bring up Wengers suggestion about how to change VAR.

But on the other hand, it means Lukaku would never be offside by his cock again.

We don't have a TV (watch everything on a laptop), don't have any streaming service subscriptions (if games are on there, no idea,) and I don't know where to watch it online, as well as not having the desire to bother. I'm not watching out of protest or anything.

Right, I see. In my nomadic twenties the only time I was in that situation for a whole tournament was Euro 2012 so I do kind of get it. Luckily for the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups I was only stranded with no coverage like that for a few days each time.

I've lost interest fast in this tournament, unfortunately. Maybe it's the fact I've watched way too much of this shit the past few weeks. Or it's more likely the 'third place goes through', 'head to head over goals difference' and 'lets play a staggering 36 group matches to eliminate only 1/3rd of the lineup' has taken its toll. But I've got no enthusiasm for it now at all.

I'm out.

(I'll definitely be watching Brazil vs Japan later).

I think that sums up the probem quite well. Obviously expanding the finals means more matches which means more money from advertising, TV deals, tickets sold and so on. But there's a lot of largely meaningless matches until we get to the vinegar strokes.

Ronald Koeman interesting stat incoming.

Koemans Netherlands have not beaten a top 25 FIFA ranked team since Koeman was reappointed as manager in 2023. He's had 40 matches in total. 13 against top 25 ranked teams. 5 draws, 8 defeats, 0 wins.

You could even stretch this back to 2019 from the end of his first stint as Netherlands boss.

Feel for Japan there, I wanted them to win, but Brazil regrouped and put it on them in the second half, put Japan against the ropes and you could see that coming really

Onto Germany v Paraguay

Pleased with the result. England have less of a chance of beating Brazil than Japan.

Real lacklustre performance from Germany. I thought they would’ve won with ease. A real drama of a penalty shootout Havertz and Woltemade with terrible penalties. Musiala shouldn’t have been on the pitch to take his. Pressure far too much for Sanabria to get the win and that’s when I thought they have fucked it… Tah sending it over the bar in sudden death is what done them in and Paraguay finally get over the line after Canale scores

At least the shootout gave some life to the game. First one Germany have ever lost.

"Where were the Germans? But frankly, who cares?"

Another terrible game, only livened up by Shearer getting wound up by absolutely everything all game.

I couldn't believe that challenge from Musiala, what an absolute twat. Haunted victorian child Darren Cann featured far too much over this game, but I finally remembered who he reminds me of.

Fantastic from Paraguay, a proper job done on the Germans.

Timber with one of the worst penalties I’ve ever seen.

An absolute disaster of a shootout. Great entertainment though. The post getting a battering, Verbruggen scoring an own goal, Bounou’s save from Summerville. Wonderful watch.

Game was alright. Quite feisty at times. Verbruggen made some great saves. Morocco should have no issues with Canada.
