Morocco were World Cup semifinalists last time around and are the current champions of a very strong group of African nations (technically). Nine out of ten of the African sides qualified for the knockout stage, and Morocco are the best of them. Quote

TibBo Posted June 30 Posted June 30 The Morocco squad is an interesting one. There's a stat where something like only 6/7 players in the whole 26 man squad were born in Morocco. Essentially they have been really proactive with tracking down and players with dual-nationalities or Moroccan heritage, and convincing them to play for Morocco rather than sitting on the bench for Spain/France etc, which has allowed them to build a really strong side. Issa Diop. Born in France. Senegalese dad, Moroccan mum. He's 29 and got his first caps this year for Morocco. And he came good in the last game. My favourite is Mexico's Santiago Gimenez. Born in Argentina. Moved to Mexico when he was 3. His grandad was from Paraguay, his mum has Italian & Ukrainian heritage. His dad was also born in Argentina and played for Mexico. Quote
Paid Members Statto Posted July 1 Paid Members Posted July 1 Apologies if I'm repeating stuff from earlier in the thread (as it might well have been in here that I saw it) but found it interesting that almost bang on 1/4 of players at the World Cup weren't born in the country they are representing. France accounts for the most (nearly 100 players born on French soil, 96 IIRC?), then it was the Netherlands (including basically the whole Curacao squad). The city of Paris alone has basically 2 squads' worth (58 or something). Quote
