Paid Members I Bent My Wookie Posted June 27 Paid Members Posted June 27 The idea that if Croatia completely capitulate against Ghana tonight that Scotland could still go through actually feels a worse solution than Scotland just getting knocked out. And that's coming from someone supporting Scotland. Mexico on home turf could put more past us than Brazil did and it'd be even worse again if we did a miracle and won 1-0 there to have the English then send us packing. It's okay, we're all Cape Verde really. Quote
Paid Members Carbomb Posted June 27 Paid Members Posted June 27 (edited) I want Scotland to do well, but would Scottish fans rather they crash out now, or have their first time getting out of the group stages ever in their history be a technicality? Edited June 27 by Carbomb Alex McLeish Quote

Paid Members I Bent My Wookie Posted June 27 Paid Members Posted June 27 You reckon the Scottish fans don't want a few days in Mexico to try and drink that place dry? Quote
Members SuperBacon Posted June 27 Author Members Posted June 27 The fact that Scotland are just waiting for teams to be shitter than them shows how farcical the 3rd place qualifying is. They don't deserve to go through as they've been one of the worst teams in it, but it's ridiculous to have them hanging around for nearly a week to see what their fate is. Absolutely shite for everyone involved (Steve Clarke can suffer though, you're on the shitlist forever for being rude to Eilidh Barbour you red egg) Quote
Paid Members I Bent My Wookie Posted June 27 Paid Members Posted June 27 (edited) Hey don't tarnish all of Scotland because of that egg head grumpy bellend. But you're right, the whole third place thing is a bit of a joke. Teams being able to go through with 3 draws or 1 high scoring win and then being battered in the other 2 games as an example just kinda defeats the point of it being the best teams going through. But the only way to make it work would be to drop the qualifying numbers to 24 and having the top 8 group winners get a bye in round 2, bottom 4 play the 4 lowest second place teams and then the 4 high second place teams play each other, which due to logistics travel etc just doesn't seem possible. Though a draw after that round to give some exciting last 16 ties may appeal more a la Champions League. Mainly because a 64 team World Cup sounds absolutely bloody awful and Ireland still wouldn't qualify. Edited June 27 by I Bent My Wookie Quote
TibBo Posted June 27 Posted June 27 It’s still the 32 best ranked teams going through, even if it is on goal difference. It’s not a loophole or something. If you want to look at the technicalities take a look at Sweden who qualified without winning any games due to the Nations League playoffs, and are now the best ranked 3rd place team. Quote

To a degree, could there not be some cases that potentially some 4th place teams would have a higher goal difference or 3 draws but no losses whereas one third place could have 1 1-0 win and 2 4-0 losses but still be the best of the worst in their group? This 3rd place thing does feel a little bit like "shit a big name team has fumbled, we need the TV rights to go a little longer, let's make sure they get one more game" as an example if England forgot they have a game tonight and Panama manage to score one open goal? That's statistically make them a better ranked side but in the reality of all the third and fourth places they'd still be a minimum 9th best of the top 8th Quote

I suppose my biggest gripe isn't necessarily 3rd place going through, it's just the nature of the waiting around. If all games finished at the same time (impossible) it'd be better, but it still needs to go (it won't) Quote

But yeah there's obviously some kinks that could do with fixing regarding games being done at staggered times. Wasn't this why back in the day group games started at the same time in game 3, so people wouldn't try and manipulate the result? When I woke up to see an Iran Egypt draw this morning I half expected a goal in minute 1 and minute 90. Quote

Yeah, and that is still happening within the groups themselves, but its a farce when you can "manipulate" the result you need nearly a week after. Quote

Not possible, if fourth place had 3 draws then third place would be one of those draws meaning third would also need a win to be higher. Only permutations for third and fourth to be level on 3 pts would be both teams have 1 win and 2 losses - and first & second draw with each other, or all 4 teams draw every game and the whole group finishes on 3 pts each.
