Cousin Jim Bob Posted June 28 Posted June 28 If England can get past Congo, then its probably Mexico in Mexico. After that probably Brazil or Norway. Not exactly an easy route to the Semi's. Where it could be Argentina. I think things might fall apart against Mexico tbh. Quote
TibBo Posted June 28 Posted June 28 We are definitely on the easier side of the bracket. Brazil haven’t looked great and might not get past Japan. Mexico would be a tough game, but we have the talent to beat them if we can somehow miraculously gel as a team. We really need to play with a bit more energy/urgency though. We’ve had 9 shots on target in the last 2 games. Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted June 28 Paid Members Posted June 28 With England's defence in the shape it's in, I can't see how they contain Brazil's front line. It won't be goalless, that's for certain, because Brazil's defence is quite crap too. But that's where Tuchel's arseing around with his team might work against them. I think they'd squeeze past Mexico somehow. Quote

Is it just me that's a racist of some sort? I still remember the edition of Newsround where they announced Zaïre was going back to its "old" name and nothing felt right about it, even to my limited 12-year-old understanding: 1. I'd never known it by a different name so how can that be its "old" one? Surely it wasn't even independent before that? 2. There's already a country called "Congo" isn't there? The one in the French textbooks always going on about its capital, Brazzaville? 3. There's just been a coup so how is it suddenly a "democratic" republic now? Not for me, Clive. They were Zaïre at the 1974 World Cup and during the Rumble in the Jungle so Zaïre they shall forever be. Quote

Zaïre is a nicer name, but as you know, it's the name associated with the fascist regime that dominated it for decades. I can understand why Laurent Kabila was keen to erase Kasavubu's and Mobutu's stench. Edited June 28 by Carbomb Alexi Lalas Quote

Yeah, I am better informed now than I was 29 years ago, but perhaps you know more details about why they specifically had to give up the clearer and more pleasant-sounding name? Not to make light of fascism, but we don't demand that of every country do we? It would be like talking about last night's dramatic 96th-minute equaliser with reference to The Democratic Republic of the Danube or something confusing like "Hungary Vienna [as opposed to Hungary Budapest]" just because of Dollfuss and Schuschnigg. Members SuperBacon Posted June 28 Author Members Posted June 28 Canada through to the last 16? An absolutely shit game, South Africa were rotten, but good drama and I like to see Canada and Mexico do well (not the yanks. Never the yanks) Every time they mention Cornelius though, I think of Babar. Quote

I think it's just the simple fact that it is a name only associated with the Western-supported, fascist, corrupt entities that staged the coup and ran the country into the ground - the country was never called Zaïre outside that context. IIRC it was the president they murdered, Patrice Lumumba, who named it the DRC originally, as he was a socialist. Also, Laurent Kabila, who led the revolution against Mobutu, was socialist, so he would have been more inclined to call it the "Democratic Republic". Quote

EDIT: @SuperBacon - it was an absolutely rotten game. Karen Carney nailed it after the game, that Eustaquìo is not just a Canadian hero, but a hero in general for saving us from extra time. Chili Posted June 28 Posted June 28 (edited) That Zaïre/Brazil game from the '74 is outstanding stuff. Especially when Brazil have a free kick at 3-0 after the the Zaire players were told not to concede less than three goals. So one of the Zaire players just runs and fucking hoofs the ball away to stall for time. I'm not able to watch this current World Cup, but I just wanted to join in. Carry on. Why are you unable to watch it if you don't mind my asking? The trouble with that clip is it was often shown in isolation, making it look like the only African nation (and only majority-black squad EDIT: aside from possibly Haiti?) at that tournament had at least one player who didn't understand the laws of the game. Even when Baddiel & Skinner got him to recreate the moment for Fantasy Football League in the 90s, I don't think they added that context about time-wasting. We don't have a TV (watch everything on a laptop), don't have any streaming service subscriptions (if games are on there, no idea,) and I don't know where to watch it online, as well as not having the desire to bother. I'm not watching out of protest or anything. Quote

Their domestic league is the shites as well. Quote
