It's not really a war nor is it likely to be. Iran will have very few options going forwards and any direct attack on the US will be absolutely catastrophic for them. The regime is probably at its weakest point in decades. I imagine we'll see more strikes on Israel before they eventually run out of steam and are forced to negotiate. The chances of any full scale war or Western troops on Iranian ground are very slim.

I think what disturbs me the most is the rapidity with which this has escalated. Two months ago, Iran was merely a fringe player at best. 

The invasion of Afghanistan and the Gulf Wars at least had months of build-up.

You are probably right but given western history in that region you wouldn't bet against a ground war. Also we've not had someone with the volatility of Trump as the leader of a western power.
