Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted April 27 Moderators Posted April 27 Yeah also he has definitely had civil servants sacked for not being 'loyal' enough to him and has a track record of hiring badly, so I wouldn't expect the highest level of competence from his security / non politically-appointed staff. Paid Members Arch Stanton Posted May 3 Paid Members Posted May 3 This could be really interesting. Good to see a mainstream documentary looking deeper into the influence that wrestling had on Trump, and so in turn, the entire world... https://www.channel4.com/press/news/munya-chawawa-steps-ring-explore-link-between-trumps-politics-and-wrestling Quote

He stole my mates idea (also a comic) for a tv show. My mate presented the idea, Channel 4 suggested working with Munya, brought him in to screen test it with him, but they eventually passed on it. Munya took the whole idea to YouTube and got in commissioned with full credit and didn’t include my mate in any capacity. Quote

Paid Members BomberPat Posted May 12 Paid Members Posted May 12 I know I'm saying this as someone who (humblebrag) discussed this exact topic for Radio 4 recently, but I'm sick of the Trump/wrestling connection stuff, and don't hold out much hope for Channel 4 to say anything new or interesting about it. I've been trying to rewrite something I wrote about it after the first assassination attempt, to try and make it less dated, so maybe I'm just sick of the sight of my own thoughts on the subject, but it's the sort of thing you could maybe get away with in 2016, or as part of a broader discussion on post-truth (as in the Jamie Bartlett thing I did), but acting like wrestling is the key to understanding Trump now feels as hacky as it is missing the point. Donald Trump phoned WWE headquarters because he thought Vince McMahon had really been involved in a limo explosion. Despite appearing at Wrestlemania, I don't think there's anyone who "gets" wrestling less than he does. The idea that wrestling explains him more than reality TV, a genre he's intrinsically tied to and was much more heavily involved in than he was in wrestling, just tells me the person making the argument doesn't understand wrestling, and likely doesn't understand Trump either. The thing is, there are connections, but they're connections that aren't as flashy and headline-grabbing as trying to pretend that Donald Trump is doing wrestling promos in politics and became a master of crowd-work by doing shit promos and getting Bobby Lashley's name wrong. The connections are behind the scenes, they're financial, they're commercial, and unthreading all of that would probably tell you a lot more about how Trump gets where he is than pretending that he's playing at being a wrestler.
