Geographically Iran would be an absolute nightmare for anyone invading. It's full of huge mountain ranges, brutal deserts and massive cities. You would have to be an absolute fucking clown to launch a ground war against them.

I would actually. Iran would be a fucking nightmare to invade and even worse to hold long term. And most importantly of all the US don't need to do it. They have all the missiles they need to hammer them into submission from afar. As long as they can keep Iran weak it solves both the America's political goals and wider ambitions for the region.

Iran are closing the Straight of Hormuz shipping lane to everyone. Just 20% of the world supply of oil and gas goes through it. I can't imagine that will cause any problems at all.

China get 50% of their oil from it so I imagine they might have something to say about it.

I'm not surprised really, it's the only offensive move Iran has left. It's certainly a good way to turn everyone against you pretty quickly though.

I don't know if that's confirmed? The Parliament has voted to approve it, but it still needs to be sanctioned by the office of the supreme leader.

The issue seems to be that it'll hurt their neighbours, and China, more than it would the US.

Maybe you could make the argument that by driving up costs for Chinese businesses you can stoke US inflation once those costs are passed down to US importers and consumers, but it's very high risk with potentially very little reward (especially if it's easy to get it re-opened, which I've seen a few people say).

With the Belt & Road initiative, I'm a little surprised that closing the strait would affect China that much. Thought most of the oil exporting to there would go over land.

China's stockpiled so much Iranian oil recently anyway so I think they'll be ok for a bit, they've had 90% of the country's sales.
