WyattSheepMask Posted March 1, 2025 Posted March 1, 2025 This might be a daft question, and probably one setting me up some justifiable ridicule, but how in the blue fuck have we ended up (again) in a situation where some World Leaders are either running scared of or bending over backwards to appease a man who covers his face in Wotsit dust and his crony who allegedly fucked his own couch. It’s like living in a rejected The Day Today episode Quote

It’s like living in a rejected The Day Today episode Because for 80 years no one conceived of a time where America wouldn't be trustworthy and we're almost completely reliant on them for everything from defence to intelligence to diplomacy. The 'free world' (horrible phrase) is a vine that grew around the United States and if you remove the US the whole thing will collapse. It's going to take years to rebuild a 'West' that isn't reliant on the US, and in the meantime everyone's forced to flatter the President in the meantime in the hope that he doesn't retreat entirely from the world order. When I used to read more on International Relations, especially around my MA, there were very few academics making the case for De-Americanising the world order - the few that did came from the left - and they were mocked and seen as fringe whackjobs. They're all owed a massive apology. They called it absolutely right. Edited March 1, 2025 by d-d-d-dAz Quote

If anyone fancies signing it the link is https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/719998/sponsors/new?token=42v6UP7z1qW6N4F8ptwc I want to sign this but Keir Starmer telling the king he's had a bad idea seems about as realistic as expecting them to nosh each other off like an ouroboros Quote

Didn't want to enter WWI, Didn't want to get involved in WWII. It's not a natural World police force. The USA has interfered in a ton of countries around the world. It's one of the reasons why it's so detested in so many developing countries. Almost every country in South America has experienced a military coup leading to a fascist dictatorship at some point, and very often it was coordinated by American organisations. The US has also destabilised many countries in Africa, or helped former European imperial powers to do so. When January 6 occurred, there was a host of Latin American commentators who joked that "the main reason the coup failed in the US was because there wasn't a US embassy providing coordination and support to the insurrectionists". This isn't some rumour or suspicion or conspiracy theory, either. This is all stuff that the CIA has openly admitted to doing. Henry Kissinger admitted he had US services overthrow Chile's democratically-elected government and replace it with Pinochet's fascist junta. The US has often styled itself as the world's policeman. But there are plenty of people around the world who don't subscribe to that belief. Quote
Paid Members BomberPat Posted March 3, 2025 Paid Members Posted March 3, 2025 There's a stat that goes round every now and then, that America has been either at war, had troops on the ground in a conflict, or been an occupying force in another country, for more than 90% of its history; there are only something like 20 years, non-consecutive, since 1776 that they weren't getting involved in another country's business at home or abroad. A terrible track record for an isolationist state! Quote

lanky316 Posted March 11, 2025 Posted March 11, 2025 With how the US are with adverts, and how Trump is as a character I'd been surprised that he hasn't done a presidential address from a podium with some sort of advertising on it. I was impressed that he actually took it to that length though. Quote
