It’s impossible to justify supporting a platform on which the very algorithm is designed to spread misinformation and bigotry. The impact it’s having on the world - and the truth - can’t be understated. I mean fuck, it’s emboldened countless people to openly discriminate against some of the most vulnerable people in society. The sooner it dies, the better. I mean, use Twitter if you want but I’d totally be in favour of having - at the very least - a moratorium on Twitter links on this forum. In the grand scheme of things it makes no difference to Musk whether we do or do not, but why even add the smallest amount of fuel to keep the engine of that vehicle for hate running? Quote
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted January 22, 2025 Moderators Posted January 22, 2025 Instagram is in the same boat isn't it? Is it getting the same treatment elsewhere or still getting a pass atm? Quote

Paid Members Scratch Posted January 22, 2025 Paid Members Posted January 22, 2025 (edited) Of all the technological advances humans have made, being able to communicate openly, cheaply and instantly should have presented us with infinite possibilities to understand each other better, become more tolerant of how each chooses to live and to understand the views of anyone and everyone. It should’ve built bridges where misunderstanding previously made it impossible. It should’ve have opened minds into new ways of thinking and alternative ways of interpreting the world in which we live. Instead, it’s been monetised to the hilt so millionaires can become billionaires at the expense of large waves of people getting angrier, more ignorant and intolerant and combative towards anything that doesn’t feel comfortable to them. The only way to stand out is to dig down on whatever makes you feel better and shout louder than everyone else to make it seem genuine. Instead of bringing people together, the opportunity to listen, debate and learn has just become a noise which many choose to either listen hard to or ignore altogether. It feels humans are as divided as ever. We live in a world where adults are having their long-held beliefs challenged, probably for the first time, and are now parents to grown up kids who have known no other way of communicating than through a 6” screen. We used to have genuine free will on what we saw, read or heard. Now everyone’s a reporter, a philosopher, the only mind capable of knowing the truth, and the massive corporate machines make their billions from directing to us only the things that we feel most comfortable consuming, regardless of its credibility, just to keep us scrolling on their platform. An entire generation has matured in a world where If it’s on the Internet, it must be true. As humans, we’ve never been bombarded with so much stuff, so frequently. I genuinely think we’re seeing that humans are just not all that great at filtering the good from the bad, and so will always gravitate to their own comfort zone, persuading others they’re right to build their own sense of wellbeing. Also, cat videos. What a fucking waste of time. Edited January 22, 2025 by Scratch Quote
RedTwoster Posted January 22, 2025 Posted January 22, 2025 On the subject of Twitter/X, this letter/confession from an alleged former employee was shared by the fantastic journalist Peter Geoghan on Bluesky (well worth following if you don’t). Alarming, but expected. Quote

Alarming, but expected. Benn Jordan did a really good video on this Anecdotally, I follow AOC on Instagram and she went live the other day. Before the election any post of hers would be filled with comments from apparent lefties with comments essentially acting like "I'm a democrat and not voting", calling her a fake progressive, siding with the establishment. These seem to mostly be gone now....how strange. Quote
Chili Posted January 24, 2025 Posted January 24, 2025 What's this cunts obsession with Canada about? I'm figuring they have something he desperately needs on the sly, and what are his realistic chances of getting what he wants. I just can't see it, though saying bend the knee or I'll impose tariffs is a weird way about things. Quote

Whatever it is, I’m sure it’s got nothing to do with their Rare Earth Mineral reserves (nor Greenland’s). Useful if you want to make a load of batteries for, I don’t know, Teslas or something.
