Whether it was politically motivated, an opportunistic burglary gone wrong or the escalation of a falling out with a neighbour (because you can definitely image Widdecombe rubbing people up the wrong way), I wouldn't wish being murdered alone in your own home on anybody. Following a life of reactionary hatred and since she seemed to genuinely believe in the great beyond, perhaps she's finding comparative calm and enlightenment now, albeit too late for any of us to benefit from a change of attitude. I was being serious earlier when I said it feels off to celebrate anyone's death, but then I still finished with an unrelated joke about not wanting to be nicked because I don't feel the need to show any deference or respect. That’s not unusual, though. Being arrested is different than being charged, and there are a whole host of reasons why this happens - speaking in a general sense it could be wrong place, wrong time (for example) or police strongly suspecting them have the right person but simply don’t have the evidence to charge them at that time - although that doesn’t seem to be the case here. There are plenty of other possible reasons, but it happens often enough and must be pretty horrible when you’re the person it happens to. Quote

I understand the need to arrest any potential suspect early to maximise forensic opportunities, but the police aren't actually obliged to release information to the press. They could have simply arrested him and questioned him without sayng a word. But saying they've arrested someone only tends to reassure the public that "don't worry, we've already got the guy", then releasing him a few hours later makes them look incompetent. They could even have phrased it as the standard "assisting with inquiries" that they use for people who might be the guy but they aren't entrirely sure, but they seemed to be all-in on this guy for whatever reason. But he's blatantly not the guy since if they had any evidence at all or even a decent suspicion they'd have held him for for the full 36 hours. Edited July 11 by Tamura Quote
