This is where I'm at in my career, it's not as easy as just saying it but I've definitely found that start-ups/young, growing companies are where I've had the most value. Where one person being able to do a decent job of multiple roles is much more impactful than a deep, narrow skillset.

Working my last day today after been made redundant, and then I’m officially unemployed.

Was told mid-September me and my team were at risk of redundancy (i.e. you are being made redundant, we’re just going through the formalities). Had 2-month notice period so thought I would be fine. How wrong I was.

I’ve spent the last two months trying to get stuff wrapped up, writing documentation, doing knowledge transfer sessions with an agency (because me and my team aren’t being made redundant, no, our work’s just being outsourced). So between that, and spending most evenings hunting for jobs, tailoring CVs and cover letters for roles, and not hearing back from all but two (one’s been a “no”, and the other I haven’t heard back for a couple of weeks so thinking that’s a “no” too), I’m just utterly drained and exhausted. I didn’t really want to go into winter and the holiday period jobless, especially since I’ve got a trip to New York coming up next month as well.

Finally transferred from the department I'd been in for 8 years (overlooked 3x for promotion, person who got the latest promotion was getting me to do their job basically last few months!) in various units to a completely new place. Strange to go from being the lad everyone went to with an awkward/complicated issue to being the newbie again at 41 years of age, but everyone in the new place seems grand and there isn't anywhere near the urgency/time pressure of my old job. I've 3 days home working in new job vs. zero in previous one, so realized today that I've to stop buying rubbish/snacks, or I'll be as big as a house fairly quickly!

I'm working for a university which means things are shit and I'll likely be made redundant next year.

The highlight has been speaking to the various, very expensive, people that have been brought in from outside to handle various things. They've all pretty much said "yeah, the university is handling this really badly." So at the very least that's been amusing.

Had a job interview today at FedEx that ended with the interviewer walking me out, telling me it’d take someone special to knock me off my perch then him shaking my hand and telling me he’d speak to me on Monday and winking at me. I’ve either pulled or I’ve got a new job lined up. Obviously now I’ve all but sealed the deal I have crippling doubt setting in and fear of the unknown. On paper it’s a no brainer, more money per hour , more hours, less work and weekends off. There is also the prospect of people swapping Pat jokes for Wilson jokes which would be a nice change of pace.

My job has been winding me up recently in that all of a sudden there are people getting promoted/moved into 'seconded roles' but none of these are advertised so all of a sudden Joe Bloggs has moved or been promoted for a few months under the radar/out of nowhere.

Wouldn't mind so much (okay I probably would) but I had to apply for a secondment last year but feels like there is no process anymore. No doubt when these become permanent roles they will get them because they've been doing the job. Bastards the lot of them.

Yeah, secondments don't have to be advertised and usually aren't.

Happens all the time at ours, but to be honest most of those people have demonstrated they can do the job so have got it on merit.

Was loving life at my place which had a contractual 2/5 days in Office rule that was completely unenforced by everyone, so I was working from home for weeks on end at times without anyone caring because I was nailing my job. Now the head office is one of those bastards bringing everyone back to office for a number of bollocks reasons that definitely isn't the fact they squandered all their money on a brand new hardly used building during covid and they're pissing the rent up the walls.
So now it's an enforced 2/5 and eventually at least 3 or more once next year rolls around meaning my commute (which changed massively after I started due to extended or cancelled bus routes) is now 2-3 hours added on to my day, to go into an office for banter I don't want.

The job is still fine, but it's just really annoying.

I’ve a dead cushy number at a decent company. I’m an IT project manager. 

i work from home 4 days a week (the last two weeks I’ve actually been able to move house whilst technically working). I have it good and i know i do.

Anything i am asked to do i can do and do well compared to my Colleagues and i’m the favourite in my team. The money is absolutely fine and  i work a 35 hour week. 
 

However at 45 i am slightly concerned that i am going soft and that my skills are stagnant and that if i ever had to change job i would struggle a lot. I am torn between “dont rock the boat” and “ if you keep going as you are then you’ll be useless anywhere else”…

 

A very weird complaint i know, it shouldn’t bother me….but it does …

I think the annoying thing is (which is my fault and inevitably will let me down) is that I don't do the whole play nice with everyone so all this does is get my back up in a 'fuck the system' kind of way.

Really sad I know, but nevermind.

I feel similarly that I'd be like an ape returned to the wild from a zoo.  I'd never survive.
