I remember Donald Glover saying that he would make racist jokes aimed towards him all the time under the guise of "it's just a bit of banter, lighten up".

I stand corrected then, I'd never heard that.

He still should have punched Mike Read.

Sorry, I thought it was more known then that https://www.okayplayer.com/culture/what-did-chevy-chase-say-about-donald-glover.html

I saw a video where a lot of his issues (especially with SNL co-stars) was highlighted but this article shows a lot (his AIDS joke in particular is awful) https://www.looper.com/62727/real-reason-dont-hear-chevy-chase-anymore/

Bad Moms

Pretty funny in parts. Kathryn Hahn steals the show, and Kirsten Bell is more appealing in this as a supporting role than a main.
Gets oddly a bit heavy handed with talking about how hard it is being a Mom including a few big speeches and having Mom interviews during the credits.
To get the point across further nearly every Dad in it is lazy or a prick except for the hot one Mila Kunis cheats on her husband with.

Sends some strange mixed messages by making Mila Kunis and her kids unlikeable despite them being the protagonists. You end up rooting for her two friends more than her.

There is literally nothing redeeming about Chevy Chase. An awful man, rightfully kicked out of Hollywood. Fuck him.

I wasn't referring to his personal life by the way, perhaps should have made that slightly clearer. He's a nightmare (his childhood can explain a lot I think) but clearly was a supreme talent at his height.

Chevy being an arsehole is why his films worked. Utterly a prick throughout all of them.

But he was generally playing the everyman. He was at his best as an arsehole, absolutely, but in the vacation films, he's meant to be the slightly wacky relatable one.

I don't know. He's utterly selfish with an underlying sense of anger which comes out. I would say Clarke is holding A LOT in within those films (plus he clearly wants to cheat on his wife and kidnaps someone in Christmas Vacation)

Vivo came out on Netflix today. Purely a vehicle for Lin Manuel-Miranda to sing his little heart out, but it's a nice little twee film. Tries hard to be Pixar and doesn't quite make it, but the songs are quite catchy.

Zoolander (Netflix)

Firmly confirmed why I had never watched this or wanted to watch it, for that matter. Aggressively unfunny. I really hate Will Ferrell.

Two for the Road

Albert Finney and Audrey Hepburn seems an unlikely coupling and here's an amazing film to prove it. Absolutely revolutionary in the romcom genre for its time, you can still see its influence to this day. You've not lived until you've seen Audrey yelling at a burning car engine "IT LIKES WATER!"

Captain Blood (1935) (YouTube)

Somehow I'd never seen an Errol Flynn until I saw this. A looker, wasn't he? Great in this too, just playing a decent bloke who happens to become a socialist pirate. Just so much fun.

The Dark Crystal

Surprised at just how dark this was. Could have done with a joke or two, Jim Henson, blimey. Wasn't really sold on the gelfling character design tbh but the other creature designs are great and it's a good quality fantasy film from a decade that was stacked with them.

Malcolm X

Definitely Spike Lee's greatest achievement but not my favourite film of his, just because I'd personally have preferred more about Malcolm's political and social work than so much on his personal life and his earlier life. Monumental filmmaking though.

The Muppet Movie

The fork in the road gag is one of the greatest of all time. The sort of film only a bastard wouldn't love.

Before Sunrise

Better than I expected even despite its massive reputation. It really nailed the ending and how Delpy and Hawke first meet, the rest of it is easy-going and relaxing stuff. No masterpiece but pleasant.

Been rewatching some Hitchcock films as well. The Lady Vanishes is still, for me, his best 1930s film, just ahead of The 39 Steps. Both are just so ridiculously enjoyable and funny. Sabotage was slightly better than I remembered and the bomb scene is incredible. The original The Man Who Knew Too Much is also really good - the church brawl especially, but you can see why he went back and redid it 20 years later.

Hush (2008) (All 4)

A man spots what he believes is a woman caged in the back of a truck. After stopping at a service station, his girlfriend is kidnapped by the same truck driver and the race is on to save her. Mediocre thriller that was all a bit preposterous following a promising start.

Free Fire (2016)

A firearms purchase between two groups goes awry. If you like shootouts you’ll love this, for me though it got too repetitive. The comedy is well done and Vernon especially is an awesome character with a steady stream of great lines. Predictable ending.

Jolt (2021)

Lindy Lewis suffers from extreme fits of rage which she controls through electrical impulses, after her “boyfriend” is killed she sets out to find those responsible. An easy watch and I didn’t see the twist coming, although said twist ended up complicating the actual story.

The Best of Enemies (2019)

A leader of the KKK and a black rights activist go head-to-head in Durham, NC over school integration after a predominantly black school catches fire. Based on a true story. Found myself getting quite teary eyed at the end even if I kinda figured how it was going to pan out. Excellent movie.

Beast (2017) (All 4)

A serial killer is targeting young girls on the island of Jersey. When Moll Huntford’s new boyfriend is named as a suspect she defends him to everyone before becoming doubtful of his innocence. Very good psychological thriller, well written and set in a gorgeous location. Jessie Buckley is superb.

Into the Night (1985)

An insomniac meets a jewel smuggler and soon finds himself looking out for her and struggling to stay alive. David Bowie as a Hitman, what more could you want? A cracking black comedy that I really enjoyed. Also, liked how the film is set in almost real time over a day. Recommended.

White Boy Rick (2018) (All 4)

Biographical story of Richard Wershe Jr., who went from an FBI informant at 14, to a drugs kingpin, to the longest serving non-violent prisoner in Michigan. Good film if at times rushed. It’s a sad story and the FBI comes out of this awfully, first with their recruitment of Rick and later their betrayal.

The Last Gold (2016) (YouTube) *Doc*

Doped to the gills, the East Germans had become the dominant force in swimming during the 1970s, obliterating opponents and World Records as they went, that was until one remarkable final race at the Montreal Olympics. This story, and notably Shirley Babashoff, deserves wider recognition.

I’d forgotten about this, it’s an absolute belter and I’ve just realised that Johnny Flynn is the guy who does the Detectorists theme!
