VHS and Betamax You Have Recently Rented

The Sure Thing is indeed good.

Edit: I’m giving this too much thought now.

Spielberg - has a few runs of great films, but the occasional Always, 1941 or Hook (I love it, but I realise I’m in the minority there) breaks the sequence.

Coen Brothers - Almost a solid run of 8 films from Blood Simple to O Brother, Where Art Thou? sadly spoilt by The Hudsucker Proxy.

Scorsese - a few mini runs, but the occasional dud (though a Scorsese dud is still worth your time).

Tarantino - Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and Kill Bill Vol 1. A fantastic run fucked over by Vol 2.

Nolan - Batman Begins, The Prestige, Dark Knight and Inception is a hell of a run.

Leone - Man With No Name trilogy followed by Once Upon A Time In The West is surely one of the greatest four film runs.

Jerry Bruckheimer - Bad Boys, Crimson Tide, Dangerous Minds, The Rock, Con Air, Armageddon, Enemy Of The State, Gone In 60 Seconds and Coyote Ugly is the clear winner though. Classics, each and every one.

That list contains its fair share of faeces.

Obviously it's all subjective, but I'd say that only New York, New York and Cape Fear are "subpar" for him, but even still they're still good films in my opinion.

But I am an unashamed Marty fanboy.

David Fincher had a good run of films. Seven, The Game, Fight Club, Panic Room and Zodiac. Stick Alien 3 at the beginning too if you think it’s an underrated classic.

I hear the assembly cut is supposed to be closer to what Fincher had planned.

I’m not sure it’s his limitations, more that with the constraints of film as a distribution medium, and little to no CGI available, you have to be creative if you’ve got an intricate, visually demanding story to tell.

Now he’s got the cachet and the technology to do whatever he wants, there’s no reason or anyone pushing for him to edit any of his creative vision. If the studio had said “make Avatar 2 under 140 minutes” and he had no choice but to do it, I’m sure it would have been a better film. Everyone benefits from a good creative scythe. TERF warning, but there was no need for HP books 4-7 to be as long as they were, she’d just gotten into a position (like Cameron) where she could do whatever she wanted.

The thing about it James Cameron is that his movies almost do great at the box office, so why would anybody want to restrict him when his movies are practically a licence to print money?

Yes, Titanic is predictable, but it's got something for everybody. Tragic love story and Sealion Dion for the girls, Kate Winslet's boobs and Billy Zane hamming it up as the heel for the boys, plus a bloody massive boat and some pretty impressive special effects.

Queen TERF's Potter excuse was that as her readership and the characters got older the books should be more mature (longer) as well.

Don't like her, or the books really, but that is valid. The story should mature with the readers.

There is a marked difference between the first and last books (and films) and that has nothing to do with her taking the piss IMO.

Anyway, shes a shit writer and let's back to films we've watched.

The French Connection

Perfect Sunday afternoon viewing whilst the rain beats down outside. My Dad's favourite film of all time (alongside Cliffhanger!)

We went to a Titanic 25th anniversary screening in February. It’s a masterpiece and I’ll hear no argument or puns about sinking!

I only saw Titanic for the first time last year and can confirm that it's definitely a good film.

I think this could be the winner.

Robert Shaw.

1973 - The Sting

1974 - The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

1975 - Jaws

They could have dethroned Lizzie and made him King after that run.

John Cazale - The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, The Deer Hunter.

Then he died. Only films he ever did. A perfect record.

That's a spectacular ability to pick a winner. If he liked horse racing he'd have been banned from the track after his first weekend.

What about Harrison Ford?

Empire Strikes Back

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Blade Runner

Return of the Jedi

Temple of Doom

Witness

Then just runs out of steam with Mosquito Coast. Even if you don’t like Jedi those first three are about as iconic roles as any created. As much as I love how grumpy he is he really doesn’t have any right to be!
