A mighty 58% on Rotton Tomatoes, so far. This is the sort of pay off Rian Johnson deserves.

I was always slightly worried about this one because there seems to have been quite a few issues with them obviously changing director and tweeking the script. Be funny if the box office is lower than the last one; a lot of competition this year.

Having just had a look through Twitter. The fanboy weirdos are blaming Rian for this film too. Brilliant.

I treat it the same as I do all other forms of kids/family entertainment/WWE PPV's. As long as there's some good stuff on it for me I won't mind sitting through the shite.

On the plus side, the visuals are astonishing in places.

Holy shit, that movie annoyed me as much as I loved The Last Jedi. The sudden lurch to an Emperor storyline was just nonsense, and the undo of Rey's parentage was awful.

So, when the cavalry go out on basically-horses, and they're riding on top of a Star Destroyer, and walking around in this giant space battle... how are they all breathing? It came across like kids playing with toys.

Bloody knackered after doing that triple bill. Film was... alright. Some bloke started shitting on it as soon as we walked out but I think that was just bollocks as it seems to be the cool thing to do after the last film. Some thoughts though

The Leia stuff was awful. Reminded me of when the actress who played Tony Sopranos mum died and they CGI’d her last scenes. And that was bad in 2001. They even spliced in some cringy lines. Rey and Ren fighting with the force over the ship was fucking cool and so was her accidentally using grandads lightning and blowing it up. Adam Driver has held this trilogy together. The kiss after she’s brought back to life invoked a strong reaction of disbelief from the audience in the screen I was in. And rightly so. It felt so out of place. She must’ve liked what she seen when he was topless in return of the Jedi. A good movie, not a great Star Wars movie

Agreed. It's worth seeing in the cinema for the spectacle alone.

In answer to your question:

They were in the atmosphere (which has been established as doable in other films e.g. Rogue One with one hovering over Jedha).

The physics of something that large hovering in an atmosphere is something else entirely!

They were in a pitched battle though. With spaceships. In space. I'd kind of see the atmosphere (rightly or wrongly) as being once you're in, like... the sky. They're above a planet, but they're part of a massive fleet.

Jesus, Star Wars Fandom is the worst fandom. TROS isn't a perfect film, but really, when was the last perfect Star Wars film? It is probably the only way they could have wrapped up the saga based on the last 2 films.it made me laugh, got me sad in a few places, but it wrapped everything up

The actual end scene was probably the cheesiest bit and was not really necessary in my opinion. However, I did tell my wife after we watched the Force Awakens that Rey would either be a grandchild of Kenobi or Palpertine, so I got that at least right

Came out of the midnight screening not knowing what to think. It was a lot to take in. I wasn’t sure I liked it. Had a lot of issues, and it felt that it was over-mythologising when it could have just focused on characters. My main feeling was that it’d need a second viewing to figure out if I liked it or not - which in itself is rare for me and Star Wars. My immediate reaction to all the others has been love.

I went for that second viewing this afternoon and was really glad to find that I liked it SO much more on a rewatch. Obviously it’s much easier to follow when you already know what’s happening, but a lot of my issues I don’t have an issue with anymore.

I can now highly recommend the film - but only if you watch more than once. Whether that negates it as a recommendation or not I leave up to you, but if you left last night unsure or unhappy, give it a second viewing. If you still aren’t keen, fair enough, but you might come out of it feeling much much happier like I did.

Carrie Fisher’s bits were much less jarring on a second watch, for example. She’s only saying platitudes but when you know she’s taken on the role of Rey’s teacher and don’t expect more it works so much better (Plus the fact that Rey is really the product of Luke + Leia makes the film title make sense - I get it now whereas I didn’t get any rising of my Skywalkers in the middle of the night!)

I still like the first half more, love the core characters in constant pursuit dynamic, but the Reylo stuff landed much better for me this time too. And the ending got me in the emotions, whereas first time round it all felt like the film was too long. Didn’t get that this time.

Still I have 2 issues:
1) Rey is a Palpatine - still totally unnecessary. Nothing that happens before or after relies on this fact. It loses nothing if she’s ‘Rey from nowhere who’s powerful in the Force’. Didn’t need the family reveal, don’t like it, but because it’s actually really irrelevant I can pretend it never happened.

2) Emperor’s motivations are muddled. Almost like they shoehorned him in because Snoke got killed. First he wants Kylo to kill ‘the scavenger’. Then he wants her alive. Then he wants her to kill him because she’s his grandchild. Then it’s because he’s the Sith and it’s nothing to do with family. Then he wants their life force to be the emperor himself again. Then he’s back to wanting ‘the scavenger’ (not his grandkid anymore!) dead. Makes no sense, don’t like it.

Everything else though? Much improved. I can now highly recommend the film - but only if you watch more than once. Whether that negates it as a recommendation or not I leave up to you, but if you left last night unsure or unhappy, give it a second viewing. Dominic Monaghan remains a pointless bit of casting though.

Poor Kelly Marie Tran. Gets unfairly abused by racist morons for months then basically cut out of the next movie. She's been completely fucked over.

That was how I was with the The Last Jedi. I left underwhelmed, but on a second viewing, I enjoyed it a lot more. I honestly think when you are so emotionally invested in a film series, you have certain expectations, and when things veer off track, it can change your opinion. But I am glad you had a better time on your re-watch. I am going again Saturday, but I did enjoy it the first time.

It is another round of the JJ Abrams cameo game, as Kerri Russell was also in his first TV Series. I'm surprised actually Hurley or John Locke didn't turn up in this one as well. I did cheer when Wedge made his return though[/spoilers]

I’d enjoyed the previous two films, but this, at times, felt like fan fiction with a budget.

It didn’t really feel like the culmination of a trilogy, like a three part story. Revealing major plot points in the opening text that should have at least been foreshadowed in the previous movies.

The Carrie Fisher stuff reminded me very much of the South Park episode ‘The Return of Chef’, after Isaac Hayes left the show so they patched together a whole episode featuring Chef, using previously recorded dialogue.

It felt very noticeable, but, to be fair, perhaps I wouldn’t have felt that way if I’d not known that It was repurposed footage.

Cannot fathom how anyone could regard it as something even resembling a decent film. I'm a big Star Wars fan and I'm aware that "they're toy adverts", "they're for kids" etc but at the end of the day: Marvel proved that it is possible to make a film that is satisfying for adults and children to enjoy and that has a meaningful, semi coherent storyline.

The Rise of Skywalker is a truly abysmal film. I'm sure its detractors will be told to cheer up as it still has all the same old belle and whistles of a Star Wars film, but Abrams cowed to the backlash of saddos everywhere who couldn't quite accept that the narrative was moving in a different, braver direction. Instead, we've got a piece of shit with paper-thin characters, horrendous pacing, an unintelligible plot with so many ridiculous twists and a frantic need to shovel in as much McGuffin shite as possible. There might as well have been a long "applause" cue for all the subtlety of the moments of fan service. Above all, the writing was chock full of the cheapest, laziest option possible.

I really hated this film, not because it "isn't my Star Wars" like so many geeks cried after the Last Jedi: purely because it IS the Star Wars of old. This film is a hokey, bloated and sterile rehash of Return of the Jedi.

Isn't this the problem with Star Wars films? Stray too far from the OG trilogy (Last Jedi) and people cry. Stay too close (TFA) and people complain it's not original. I'll say it again, worst fan base then Wrestling.

What would a Star Wars look like if it were written by Reddit?  Now we know.

I will always love Carrie Fisher, but fuck me her inclusion is janky.  Whilst they might not have CGI'd her as they said they wouldn't, they've clipped her out of the original outtake and dropped her in.  So you have another actor delivering, essentially a monologue, shot over the shoulder of a body double then we have a cut to rotoscoped Leia who gives them a one word answer and then we flip again to the over the body double's shoulder shot.  It's really awkward.

The Last Jedi obviously took too many brave choices so we'll erase all of that.  Rey's parents were insignificant were they?  We can't possibly have her not being tied to a core character from the original trilogy.

The first fifteen-twenty minutes is full on ADHD.  Jump jump jump jump.

The baddies still can't build a ship without an inherent and easily exploitable weakness.  The single laziest one of them all.  Shoot at the massive gun and the whole ship explodes.  So they've built these new super powerful star destroyers that have a glowing baboon's arse exposed weakness on the OUTSIDE of the ship.

The space battles are just diminishing returns at this point.  When the rebels stand up to 10:1 ratios now you need 1000:1 for any sense of drama.

The Rey/Ren confrontations remain the absolute highlight, there are some sweet cameos, and Chewie gets a Yavin medal.

I know it is just excuses but

The ships being easily destroyed. I mean you can say that. But, the explanation is they couldn't use the shields unless they were out of the atmosphere. And I assume it is the weapon's power being super combustible.I mean it's not as lame as there being an a tiny port which blows up a battle station.Personally I didn't find the Carrie Fisher stuff that bad. I thought considering the task they had, and that she was obviously going to play an important part in the close of a saga.

That said, It worked for me. I enjoyed it for what it was, but it was clear no film was going to please the fan base.

Cheers Hannibal and Johnnyboy

I thought the film was pretty horrendous. I've really enjoyed the last couple of films but this was crazy. Setting the film up using the starting credits was really lazy, and could easily have been covered in the last film. Which reminds me the end of the last film about the boy using the force to get the broom seems totally wasted.

I hated Hux being the spy, that was probably the stupidest part of the entire film.

I hated Fin not declaring his feelings for Rey.

I hated Leia being a jedi, when did that happen? Oddly, I didn't think using old footage of Leia was that bad, but I wasn't thinking about it at the time, I'm sure I'll hate that too when I watch it again.

I hated a lot of it actually. Adam Driver has saved this series with his acting.
