Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 21, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted January 21, 2017 I think that's true to a certain extent. I was hating it before that final shot, which just seemed like Ridley going, "Oh fuck, forgot to connect this to the Alien Cinematic Universe, best put summat in 'ere". But I think a lot of people were expecting some kind of amazing prequel that answered a lot of questions from Alien. I didn't but still thought it was awful. Aside from the operation scene which was fucking brilliant.
Paid Members chokeout Posted January 21, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted January 21, 2017 But I think a lot of people were expecting some kind of amazing prequel that answered a lot of questions from Alien. That actually annoys me. I don't think we need any backstory to the Aliens. I don't care how they are created. Why can't there just be another race of creatures out there which, unluckily for us, are perfect killing machines. It was a similar thing with The Rob Zombie remake of Halloween. His insistence on cramming a back story in to Michaels origin had no point and actually took away from the giant lummocks in a mask going on a rampage. Paid Members Bellenda Carlisle Posted January 21, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted January 21, 2017 Unnecessary backstories are my worst. Tim Burton's Willy Wonka and most Texas Chainsaw massacre films made in the last 20 years are other horrible offenders.
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted January 21, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted January 21, 2017 I really enjoyed Split too. It flew by and, as discussed, a lot of that is due to the incredible performances by the two leads. It's maybe the best performance I've seen from McAvoy. The scenes I saw with Maaaaat Daaaaaamon filming made it in the final
Paid Members WeeAl Posted January 23, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted January 23, 2017 Just a few quick thoughts from a week when I've managed to catch a lot of films that weren't PG rated: The Deer Hunter: I watched this the Sunday before last, and I'm ashamed to say I had never seen it before. Just a combination of it hardly ever being on and when it was I would miss the start of it. I'm glad I watched it alone. The opening 70 minutes or so is slow and I'd have never been able to convince the girlfriend to stick with it. But it was an absolute requirement, for the film to work, that it took it's time getting to the Meat and Potatoes. It's been a long ass time from I watched a film that stuck in my mind as much in the days following. The famous scenes russian roulette scenes had me on the edge of my seat and feeling it every inch of the way with Walken, De Niro and Savage. Walken's shining moment. Absolutely had me the whole way when they got to the Vietnam scenes and if they had sped up the 1st act then that would probably have lessened the investment in the rest of the film. Thumbs up. Lincoln: I meant to watch it in the cinema when it came out, but I never got the time though I happened to be at home last Friday and seen it was just about to start on Film 4 so I thought it was as good a time as any. I was really invested in it. Daniel Day Lewis had me not believing I was watching Lincoln himself and not somebody doing a very good job of playing somebody else. He was fabulous. I didn't find it long or drawn out and was actually surprised when it finished. Tommy Lee Jones was impressive in his part as well. Thumbs up. Live By Night I thought the film looked incredibly well. It looked quite beautiful actually. But I was really looking forward to it, and I felt let down a little. I don't think it was as good as Affleck's other efforts these past few years such as The Town, or Argo. I still enjoyed it, and thought it was a good film, but I was hoping for more and didn't get it here. Thumbs in the middle Split This was a Tour de Force from McAvoy here. He really put the work in and I have a lot of respect for his capability after this and it'll put his films in the "must go to see" category for me now going forward rather than the "I'll see if I get round to it if the reviews are good" section. I was looking forward to Live By Night way more that I actually had heard nothing about Split and when a mate asked me to go see it with him on Sunday I thought sure why not, it might be decent enough, and in the end I had a really good time and needless to say, I'm intrigued by the ending. Thumbs up.
Briefcase
Not sure what to really think of Split, but might be a film that I appreciate if I watch again. Some of it was clever, the acting very good but some of it was on the silly side and wasn't necessary either. I suppose it can get away with it in some ways. I can't say I walked out of the cinema thinking it was a great film.
Mr_Danger
Autopsy of Jane Doe was a cracking little surprise. A bit of a throwback not to dissimilar to an episode of The Twilight Zone. Having no prior knowledge to the plot it was really tense and creepy for the first half. Unfortunately it tails off a bit in the last third but it's was well worth a watch. The girlfriend made me escort her to the toilet she's was so scared. Oh, it has Brian Cox in it too!
Mr.E
Still needing to see Split, as it looks really good. Did manage to see an older movie of McAvoy's . Filth is an amazing performance from him, being very dark/grim but also really funny (albeit dark humour) in places. Some really minor parts would be terrible if not supported by the amazing cast, (Jim Broadbent is a good stand out), but overall it's a great movie. I never used to rate James McAvoy all that much, seeing as a good stage actor who does movies, but a lot of his recent movies have really turned me around. Keith Houchen
I rewatched Die Another Day again, thanks ITV4, and it was worse than I remembered. Ooh they're in London so let's have London Calling play. Even my sweet, beautiful Rosamund couldn't save it.
Paid Members Tommy! Posted January 27, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted January 27, 2017 (edited) Is die another day the one where Kim Chi gets diamonds stuck in his face and the car's invisible? Edited January 27, 2017 by Tommy!

Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted January 27, 2017 Author Paid Members Share Posted January 27, 2017 You'd be amazed how many Die Another Day apologists there are. It's fucking terrible, the absolute nadir of James Bond.
Paid Members ColinBollocks Posted January 27, 2017 Paid Members Share Posted January 27, 2017 I mostly hate it because whenever it's mentioned I spend the next few hours with the chorus of that awful Madonna song in my head. "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day" "I guess I'll die another day"
