I think this is great news. Villeneuve is one of my favourite directors, he never misses, and he's now in a position where he can completely dictate the direction of a Bond film or say to an interfering studio "Nah, you're alright."

Bond doesn't have to go back to what brought it to the table, it needs to detach itself from continuous storylines and taking itself too seriously. That's what ultimately sunk the Bond films. A fresh voice is what it needs and Villeneuve will bring that.

I can see why they're taking so long with the next Bond. It's a tough call as to what direction they go in. I do like the idea of a fresh approach but is that what the majority of the audience wants? I guess we'll see what they decide.

Either way, definitely excited knowing he's directing. A great first step.

Obviously they put themselves in a spot with how the last one ended. Is it a ruse, do they assign the designation to someone else, do they go back to when he first joined the secret service. They have options open to them but they need to find a way to stop the franchise being so choppy in terms of quality and that's been a problem whoever has had the role.

Now they’ve announced a director, I hope to god they get the actor sorted soon. Reading the same three names (Henry Cavill, Idris Elba or Tom Hardy) being bandied about for the past million years has become incredibly boring.

Yeah, very true. They've basically got a blank canvas at this point which should be a good thing, but sometimes too many options can be a bit challenging to know what's best. Especially when you leave it for too long. Hopefully they can have a longer term plan as they never seem to be very good at that.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson seems to be a heavy favourite for it

Hopefully not, he's very bland. Saying that, I have no suggestions. Most the names I've seen bandied around look too young and babyfaced for my liking.

Regé-Jean Page might be a decent outside bet. I'm not a big fan of the Bond films in general (some are good, some less so) but I imagine they could do with having a fresh actor with no baggage, and I heard a few whispers about his name being bandied about for it, albeit a fair while ago. Not sure if anything ever came of it though.

The last I heard it was either James Norton, Jack Lowden or Harry Lawtey which is a nice change from the usual names that get bounded about constantly.
