Fury Road did brilliantly on home markets, and I think they were hoping for similar with Furiosa.

My take, naturally, is Furiosa deserved to be huge because it's awesome and Better Man didn't because it's a musical.

But that's the reason why it did bomb. The main bulk of clawing your profit back is going to be in the US. But if the main subject matter is about a pop star and his music, who the US have never liked or bought into. They're not going to see a movie about him. Elton John and Queen are universally liked worldwide, Robbie Williams isn't, that's why he lives there because he can be in relative obscurity.

We have Greatest Hits on at work and they were constantly advertising the film. And that's UK's biggest commercial station.

According to IMDB, Furiosa's budget was $168m and takings so far is $174m so still in the black.

The fact we got two excellent big budget Mad Max films and a third not totally in the bin yet is pretty great tbh. The Wasteland (pedo alert) Fortnite season was also pretty good. My little lad explaining how the Mad Max car works and  singing Metallica to me was a good time. I suppose if George Miller is desperate enough to make it he can just sell his soul (and a 3 season spin off with a producer credit) to a streaming company.

That's a good point, because of advertising right?

I don't know why they don't include advertising costs in the budgets of films as standard because it always gives a false picture of how much is actually spent on films when they are being made.

Furiosa was excellent by the way, as was Fall Guy, which was released at a similar time, was also well-reviewed and also bombed.

Devon is correct, films usually need to make a minimum of double its budget and sometimes triple its budget to be profitable. Mainly due to marketing and profit sharing deals.
 

In addition @Rossman the global box office has been seen as more important to a films success than the US for well over a decade. Which is why you often see Chinese producers credited in films as well as extra scenes filmed specifically for the Chinese audience. It’s also why there was a period where a Chinese actor/singer/model would have at least a cameo in a film because that was seen as beneficial to sell the film to china which restricts the amount of western film releases.

Just posted about this in the Standup Comedy thread (and PM'd Dev in case he hadn't seen it). Got my ticket for the Saturday show, excited to be seeing it in person after I got into it last year. Still need to catch up to current, good motivation to do it.
