Those numbers need the context of venue capacity or tickets released; 8,437 in Chicago might look good and 883 Hamilton bad on volumes alone, but for all I know, Chicago capacity could be 20k and Hamilton 1k, in which case Hamilton would be doing amazing.

I know you’re only being rhetorical but they’re not running 1k venues for their brand new televised show. They’re just doing shit.

A quick google shows the FirstOntario Centre to have a capacity just over 17,000 for Ice Hockey and around 19,000 for concerts. I get that you’re using 1k as an example, but unless it’s got a Manhattan Centre style set up on the roof of the building then they’ve just had a nightmare which going to look awful on TV unless they take a leave out of KISS’ book and start giving away $2 tickets.

Even just under 8,500 in the United Centre for Punk’s big return (regardless of it being in his hometown) has got to be considered a disappointment considering that they sold the place out last time on the speculation that he “might be there”, and could go a long way in showing how the perception of him in the fanbase’s eyes has changed since the incident at All Out

All I’m saying is that if I was an EVP in this company, and I held a grudge against CM Punk, I’d double book arenas so that The Elite on Wednesday always outsold Punk on Saturday.

800-odd tickets sold for the 19,000 seat venue, Phil? It’s a dog’s life.

And the coolness of the company in general.

If AEW is going to be drawing shit they should at least off set that by doing shows from cool, unique places. Yeah 1000 paying fans doesn't look great, but if it's 1,000 fans jam packed in a one of a kind venue then that's all anyone will notice. WCW style shows on a beach, at a swimming pool, shopping mall. Let's go fucking mad with it, have a wrestling show in a mountain valley or something. If they can't get big crowds at standard arenas they need to start thinking outside the box.

Sorry, but Tony Khan is a genius.

This will absolutely be a failure as its a 3rd show (is that right?) at a time when they have too much TV as it is.

When it does fail, people will (incorrectly) blame Punk, his ego won't like that, and he will fuck off home to watch hockey and read comics, and Khan will have got rid of his biggest headache.

Genius. Toot toot motherfucker. Toot toot.

Hopefully they've got some big announcements on Dynamite for this because otherwise interest is basically zero it seems. If it opens up with the same set as Dynamite and Excalibur and Tony Schiavone on commentary it'll basically immediately say to the audience "this is more of the same". Then when someone gets attacked post match by their opponent and then someone else comes out to run them off in the first match you'll feel exactly like your watching Dynamite again.

Still think they massively dropped a bollock by not booking Punk vs Joe for the first show. Fuck the "you need to build it up" crowd, sometimes you just have to make a big splash.

Would you risk Injury prone Punk to be booked in a singles match after being out for over 9 months?

Yes.

I wasn't suggesting there was a right or wrong answer to that. I actually agree that is what they should have led with in many ways, but can also see why a tag match was seen as the preferred option.

A dog will come out and interfere in the match for CM Punk. He removes his costume. It's Ace Steel!

Tony then comes out and gets really angry and demands Ace gets out of his ring.

As they walk backstage you can hear the faintest words..

Put the costume back on Ace. Now. Good boy.

I totally agree with this - do something different, and hype it as being something different. Make it feel like something you want to be at, because the experience is so different. The episode of Dynamite that took place on the Jericho cruise is a good example of just how effective doing something like that can be. If the show dies on its arse attendance-wise immediately, it's going to be really challenging to recover from that.

there's also only 70 miles between Hamilton and Toronto they're both on the border of places like Illinois, if you'd have announced one you might have got one side going to the other but as it is you now just get two undersold shows.

KISS played here about ten years ago and incuded all the usual places inc Manchester, then weeks later for some mental reason they decided to add Liverpool forgetting that any cunt who'd have bothered already had Manchester tickets, they ended up playing to no fucker (compared to the rest/usual). They need a specialist to gauge how arsed people can be with things like this. An Ergonomist of being arsed.
