Its this kind of thinking that has meant we have the churn of Prime Ministers that we've had for the last 10 years. Burnham has 18 months and then the British public will want him gone. Then it will be someone else for 18 months, then a general election and then Farage. Then there will be 5 years of that, because that cunt has no shame and like his idol he will want to grift every pound he can out of the country for himself. If you are going to be ill or out of work do it now because there will be nothing left of the country at that point. Burnham is the problem though, let's write him off immediately. Fuck this. Not having that. I don't like the insinuation of 'support this prick otherwise we'll end up with Farage, and it'll be your fault for not supporting Labour!' How's about our politicians just do better. I'm not asking for much, just condemning a genocide would be a nice start. Andy Burnham is a member of the Labour party, so I don't have to give him a chance. It's not like these are some brand-new party with radically different views. I know exactly what they stand for and I know that by being a member of the Labour party alone (nevermind it's leader) he's at best a fucking idiot and at worst a genocide-enabling transphobe. We've just had two years of them implementing policies that were to the right of David fucking Cameron and Burnham didn't hand his membership in. He stood idly by waiting for his chance to grasp power. He's a chancer and a charlatan and frankly, more fool everyone else for being taken in by his 'I like The Smiths and I eat chips, I'm just like one of you!' act. Fuck the whole party. The lot of them are utterly spineless wankers. Quote

That's not an "insinuation" from Lion-o Midlands, it's the reality we're living in. The onus is on Labour to do better, not you to blindly support them but the point is absolutely right. This needs to go really fucking well for Andy Burnham or we might as well crown that grifting nazi bastard now. I'll also give them a fair shot before judging. I do like, broadly, what Andy Burnham stands for a whole lot more than Keir Starmer. I think he's an effective leader and has a social responsibility that I agree with. I hope he's got the balls and the backing to go as far as is needed to make the country a pleasant place to live for people who are on the bones of their arse and create some aspiration beyond not becoming a right-wing hellhole. He'll not please everyone, especially on here, but if he rules for the majority of people who just want a reasonable standard of living and doesn't rule in fear of losing to Reform then he'll be a great improvement. Paid Members Jazzy G Posted July 21 Paid Members Posted July 21 (edited) @Carbomb the thing is people don't just have to vote for Farage, do they? He needs to be able to field enough candidates to form a majority, and it honestly wouldn't surprise me if they implemented a much needed policy of needing a full DBS check to be able to run for any political office. No way is he going to be able to get enough people to run in MP elections that will stand up to even the lightest of checks into their background. You can see from the number of councillors who turn up for their first day of their new role and quit or defect. That happening at national level? It'd make Reform look even more useless than they are. Won't happen. Better to have a decent presence in parliament and complain about the establishment and deep state keeping you from power than stand at the dispatch box and have to be responsible for the whole shit show. And this is it for me. I just want things to get better (things can only get better right? Oh...) and I completely understand people thinking that as a member of the party, Burnham has sat and watched them implement some of the more abhorrent policies or be complicit in aiding what's happening in Palestine. Perhaps if he was so principled he would've stood down from the party? Well that is a good point and people are free to judge him on that. He's now the prime minister and I just want him to be effective while he is. When he says that he wants to end rough sleeping, I desperately want to believe he believes that. I am sure I'm not alone in that that is a very emotive subject close to my heart, and I think it can be eradicated as well, so it does give a tiny bit of hope. So I have to believe that can happen, otherwise I just spiral into accepting that everything is fucking shit and nothing will ever improve in this country, and as a naturally depressive person that's not good. I think one thing we can all agree on is that absolute tosser David Lammy losing his cabinet position was lovely. His seat next please. Quote

I think that may be underestimating just how much support those fuckers have. The last GE was the first one in my entire life where I've been thankful for the First Past The Post system, because if we'd had PR, Reform would have had a shit-ton more MPs in parliament. It was truly disturbing to see just how many actual votes they were getting. You've highlighted one place where Burnham absolutely must do better than Starmer, which is utilise that super-majority to tighten the rules and checks regarding electoral operations. In any other era, Farage and co. would have been smashed to bits by now for their dodgy shit, and the current government has been far too slow in building this case against him. The fact that there still isn't legislation to force Reform Ltd. to publish their donors list shows just how inept they've been. It's not even from a point of ethics: Reform is the biggest threat to them politically right now, and they should have moved tactically to deal with that ages ago. 22 minutes ago, SuperBacon said: I think one thing we can all agree on is that absolute tosser David Lammy losing his cabinet position was lovely. I'm fairly convinced he would have lost his seat ages ago if it hadn't been for that. I'm all for hoping that Burnham, with a bit of time, might make some inroads into the most significant issues facing people in the UK at the moment, and just fucking stop with the policy of trying to appeal to Reform voters with the horrendous anti-immigrant rhetoric, but we're living in an era where every expectation of something better happening has been regularly and unfailingly undermined and defeated - and very often by the people who were supposed to be bringing something better. It's understandable to want to cling on to hope, even after everything that's happened - but it's equally understandable that people have just fucking had enough. Quote

It's exhausting. Of course it's very easy to say "if you want change you have to work for it/vote for it!" etc etc, but the problem is people have tried and tried and constantly believed in people that get in power and just become utter cunts. It's so hard to genuinely believe in anything now. But yes, I do think it's very much a "stop the worst getting in" approach now rather than actively believing in anyone else. The problem is you're battling against a bunch of voters who are either living in the past, genuine racists/idiots, or the most dangerous ones - people who don't actually have a fucking clue what they're voting for and just follow or take headlines out of context etc. We've all seen the interviews where they get destroyed because they don't really know anything. But that's what Farage and his like thrive and feed on - stupidity. Quote
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted July 21 Paid Members Posted July 21 While PR would have led to more Reform MPs it would also have led to more Green MPs, Lib Dems etc as well. There'd possibly be a short sharp spell of idiots in Parliament, but if we're introducing more stringent background checks for anybody wants to run in an election it'd sort itself out in the long run. Yeh, but there still wouldn't have been anywhere near as many Greens or Lib Dems as Reforms - I remember seeing the numbers as they came up during the live election reporting and just being really depressed at how many Reform voters there were in comparison to the non-right-wing parties. Reform got 4.1m votes, the Greens only 1.8m. 1 minute ago, HarmonicGenerator said: They used to say this about a lot of seats in the North East, too, but the past ten years have obliterated those decades-long strongholds. True, but the influences are different, I think. There was a strong trades union-based socialist tradition in the North East, which has been gradually undermined by the party that was supposed to represent it, by vilifying that very tradition and pandering to the middle class. In the case of London boroughs, Labour has been seen as a bulwark for ethnic minorities against the racism of the right wing, which was kind of bolstered by the violence of the 50s, 60s, and 80s, and any vote that isn't for Labour is seen as potentially letting the Nazis in. Plus, Lammy is a black man from a single-parent, working class, council estate family in Tottenham - he's about as close to safe as you'll get, regardless of how much betrayal he has in his locker (and there is a lot). It's so hard to genuinely believe in anything now. Have they? Until 2024, we'd had 14 years of tory rule. During that time, cunts got into power and were cunts. The only exception was Nick Whatshisface who seemed alright until he jumped at the first sniff of power to form the coilition government with Cameron. Starmer was a huge disappointment but it was no secret that he wasn't very far left, if left at all. Sadly, we live in a country where the right has won almost every GE since 1979 and the only exceptions are red Tories. We've had the opportunity to vote in left-wing government and turned it down. We don't need to be giving up. We need a Labour PM who delivers what the country needs and unites people to care as much as all those on the right do. I don't know if it's Andy Burnham, I just hope to fuck that it is. Quote
