Surely this is why Garcia and 2.0 are facing Darby and Sting.

They interrupt Darby in the ring on Rampage so Punk, Sting and Darby can go through there finishers before the “welcome back” promo

So I'm fair new to AEW (I've avoided wrestling for a while), but I thought Jericho was a face? His colour commentary was very heelish. And while I enjoyed the match the heel/face dynamic of the main event was all over the shop - I wasn't sure who they wanted me to cheer or boo.

That said, I really enjoyed the show.

Jericho just seems to naturally revert to a heel whenever he does commentary. As for the main event, I agree. Britt Baker seems to be doing a tweener type thing where she's booked as a babyface but acts like a heel and as it was her hometown she got a huge face reaction. Red Velvet is usually a babyface. Kris Statlander usually gets a strong babyface reaction but her attacking Britt got her booed out the building. It was all a bit of a badly booked mess to be fair.

I don't think they're telling you who to cheer or boo in this instance. Britt is generally a bit of a dick to everyone but Skiavone but she's popular in spite of that and in her home town, they just embraced the partisan crowd. It's a bit jarring after years of people being forced to bury their own town or just being buried in it.

I think medium-term, Britt is going to be a face but the next feud is Statlander and the money match is Thunder Rosa so the current disposition suits them.

I didn't think it was a problem. It was an underneath babyface vs. a Superstar and the post match was a good transition to the next thing. I still only have a problem with them scrambling to explain Hayter instead of ending on the mystery of it. They should have learned from the Butcher and Blade debut.

Yeah, fair point. But seeing the build being Velvet as a face, then she wrestles as a heel, while Britt Baker builds as a heel, then wrestles as a heel just threw me. I think it's because I've been out for ages, but I wanted a clearer dynamic during the match. If Baker was going to be cheered, as I assume they expected based on Velvet, I'd have had her be much less heelish.

Yeah, I can see that. Though given the crowd, it would have died on it's arse if they'd had Red building babyface hope spots while being despised. Better to just embrace it.

Agreed, which is why I'd have had Baker wrestle more face-like. No Rebel interference etc.

I know I'm being fairly picky. It was a good match generally, and I'm certainly sold on watching them both again.

I’m much happier that Britt stayed consistent with her character than if she’d completely changed her act just because she was in her hometown and people were cheering her. The way the crowd went mental for her regardless is surely evidence that they made the right choice.

Genuine question because I can’t remember, whenever the Hart Foundation would wrestle in Canada and get those huge babyface reactions, did they alter their in-ring style and work less heelish?

I think it's different from Butcher and the Blade, and less of a mystery, because Jamie Hayter has wrestled for AEW before. It would have been weirder had the announcers not known who she was.

It was more just an issue of managing expectations, though - I love Jamie Hayter, so was happy to see her. But she's not a big star to most people, so it was an odd spot to debut her in, and there was no real reason to dress her all up in black as if it was a big surprise. She didn't necessarily need to be in her ring gear - I always find the trope of having wrestlers always in their gear a very WWE thing - but could have been in something more identifiable. There was no need to make it seem like a shock reveal.

Friday Dynamite was hovering around 500k I think. Happy to be corrected though.

Fine debut numbers and you'd assume that this week could do better. Be interesting to see how it's doing in a month or so after the hype has died down.

Perfect time to drop Bryan in

I'd maybe agree if she was in her gear but they clearly had her dress up (or down) to provide a bit of a mystery aspect and that worked. So just run with it. I don't want the announcers to appear stupid, a real WCW trope, but nor do we need Excalibur's knowledge of every indy worker in the world on show. They could and should have held that over.

In truth, bit hindsighty, but given the dynamics involved, they really should have had Red Velvet challenge first and done the Nyla match in Pittsburgh.

I thought that last night but given the post-match angle, I still don't think that makes it any better.

I'd chuck this in the AEW youtube shows thread, but since nearly all of it is based around Fuego getting his contract. Have a ball, the section with the roster backstage all loving him is brilliant.
