AEW Video Games

The one plus of having proper dorks running the company is they know their gaming and value it. I have no doubt Kenny Omega and Tony Khan are dead serious when they go on about making the best wrestling game ever. With WWE/Vince, they clearly see it as an annual cash grab and not much else.

An underrated part of how WWE got so big over here in 1999/2000 was that everyone seemed to have and loved the WWF games (whether that be Attitude, Wrestlemania 2000, Smackdown etc). The Smackdown game, in particular, seemed to create so many fans.

The last wrestling game I got excited about was the TNA game and that was a mess. Granted, Midway being close to bankruptcy and forcing out an unfinished game was the main reason it was shite, but still they had gamers like AJ Styles and Samoa Joe involved and we were promised No Mercy etc, so it was so bloody underwhelming.

The reveal video is decent enough.

The TNA game would have been perfectly fine if it had longer to cook, my main issues were the computer AI that cheated more than Mortal Kombat on very hard and the lack of moves but the actual engine felt really good in multiplayer.

Plus the wrestlers looked better than games many years newer.

I wouldn't be a wrestling fan to this day if not for those N64 games. Having grown out of wrestling by '92 I had zero interest in it by the late nineties, but I remember being intrigued by WCW/nWo World Tour whilst perusing the titles in a rental shop and playing that game lead directly into me wanting to watch a bit of Nitro. I knew I could watch that on Sky because I'd noticed that it would be shown on one of the German satellite channels that I used to flick through whilst looking for erotic thrillers on a Friday night when my mum and dad would fuck off to the pub. From there, playing those games went hand-in-hand with my enjoyment of watching the shows on TV and by late '99 I was totally hooked on WWF.

If this game turns out to be as good as they hope it will be, I could totally see it turning significant numbers of gamers onto AEW Dynamite.

The character builds look a bit odd although Shida looks great. I was hoping that the GM mode would be on the console game as I just don't play mobile games. I suppose it still could be.

I have none wrestling fan friends who still bust out No Mercy during a Goldeneye/Mario Kart sesh. Fair enough it never converted them to wrestling fans but 20 years later they still enjoy beating the shit out of each other in a never ending ladder match.

Aye, I watched the odd time in 99/00 but was hooked completely when I got Smackdown for the PS1 with my confirmation payday in 2000. I got the game strategy guide book with it, which gave a bit of  backstory about the wrestlers characters, so I knew those off by heart as well which helped when watching the shows.  I remember I could barely sleep the night before Smackdown: Shut Your Mouth came out on the PS2, first game with all the WCW & ECW lads in it.

This is 100% the case for me. I watched wrestling in the mid-90s, drifted away from it, and then it was getting the demo of Smackdown that got me back in. I didn't know any of the wrestlers apart from The Undertaker, who I assumed was a different bloke to the one I watched in '95, but I just loved the game. Pretty soon everyone seemed to have it, and get-togethers at mates' houses were always Smackdown, Tony Hawk, and Medal of Honor.

I don't know if the market is the same to allow for an AEW game to create new fans, but if it's anything other than a complete disaster gameplay-wise, it's another step toward making them look like a major player.

Essentially they've got a cut scene with ropey looking graphics, an 80s Wrestling Mania knock off, a rubbish looking logo, a casino game, a bloke who designed a wrestling game 20 years ago and a bunch of promises that mostly rely on nostalgia.

Its the most AEW announcement ever.

Plus Jericho's neckerchief thing, No Mercy never had that

Here's the developer for the GM game, I'm not as big into the indie game scene as I once was but I like to think I still have a little knowledge there.. no idea who these are. Looks like they tried at jumping on the MOBA bandwagon a few years back.

Put that in spoiler tabs will you. 3/4's of a page of random tweets. No thanks

This actually looks like it could be the business. I was afraid it might go a bit too off the caricature/novelty deep end but it just looks and moves like a retooled Smackdown 2 with an AEW skin on it. As long as the roster's decent and it's got a good create a wrestler, it should be good fun:

I like the look of those mini games. It would be a nice little edition to run alongside the main beat em up components.

The obvious mini game would be something like the guitar hero thing where you have to press the buttons to move Tony Sniff to his next line.
