I'm willing to give it more time - I've seen some people say it gets better after the first one or two episodes - but what it feels like to me is that somebody's written a YA story and the producers have tagged the Addams Family IP on it, like they couldn't get their series made until someone in a boardroom said, "well what if we make the girl Wednesday Addams?", rather than coming up with a story and setting that has naturally grown from the starting point of  "Wednesday Addams as a teenager".

BBC announces "stellar" festive TV selection :https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/mediapacks/bbc-christmas-whats-on-iplayer-channels-2022/

Another year being forced to watch the Call the Midwife special while hoping for the sweet release of death.

Inside No9 and a feature length episode of The Detectorists means I can forgive BBC for all the other shit.

another "remember this?" series, then, as I watched the first two episodes of Willow yesterday. It's not terrible, but doesn't really have anything going for it anyway, just a grab-bag of fantasy story clichés with none of the slightly off-kilter charm of the movie. A real victim of HD making everything look a little too clean and cheap and not as magical as the original movie, too. I find it irritating that the central characters just speak like Disney Channel teenagers, which I suppose is a conscious effort to make them seem out of place in a world beholden to old traditions, but just takes me out of the world they're trying to create. Warwick Davis line reads, particularly when he has to do a lot of exposition, are so flat and emotionless, that I find it hard to concentrate on them, he's somehow far worse an actor than he was in the original film.

Headline of the Guardian review made me laugh.

"Willow review – Warwick Davis’s fantasy reboot is lots of fun … until he appears"

Damn that's harsh!

I used to watch the original movie a fair bit as a kid but remember nothing about it. Definitely wasn't considered a classic in my house. I'll probably give this a go but if it requires me knowing a bunch of stuff from the original movie I'll probably duck out quick.

Just finished 2nd series of The White Lotus. All the way through this series I didn't think it was quite as good as the first series, but that may well have changed after the finale. Brilliant series, can't wait to see who they bring in and where they set the third series.

Spoiler

I genuinely gasped when I heard that THUD of Jennifer Coolidge banging onto the boat as she fell overboard. I was gutted! Was hoping she'd be at every hotel for each series, oblivious to everyone dying around her.

I think it pipped the first series. Christopher Moltisante, F. Murray Abraham , Tom Hollander

Getting deep bummed by his ‘nephew’

a pretty great crew young actors bar some nobhead who looks like he should be on Eastenders and Coolidge being great. I wasn’t massively in to the awkward couples joint holiday but that’s because it was so uncomfortable to imagine.

Ugh. Army porn like that is exactly the type of shit I hate.

I recently finished The Bear which I absolutely loved. Great acting, brilliantly written naturalistic dialogue from a cast of wonderful characters who feel totally real, beautifully shot and made me really want a good sandwich. Can't wait for season 2.  It's a tie with Andor for best telly I've seen this year.

In the spirit of Christmas I also re-watched the It's Always Sunny Christmas Special yesterday which has become a new Christmas tradition. Not only does it have two of the funniest moments in any form of media ever made (the mall Santa scene and the couch scene) and all the usual Sunny lunacy, chaos and cynicism, it also has a very genuinely sweet ending and message that hey Christmas and all it's traditions are actually bullshit - what really matters is just spending some time doing something nice with the people you love whatever and whoever that is. even if it's throwing rocks at trains.

I've also been up a lot at night recently as my little lad is ill so have been re-watched Twin Peaks: the Return which is just as good on the rewatch. Watching the Dougie storyline a second time is a lot of fun and rewarding unlike the first time (which felt like agony). Also knowing where the whole thing is heading I can analyse scenes better and try to work out what it actually going on. Next episode is the absolutely legendary episode 8 which I am very excited to see again.
