Paid Members BomberPat Posted July 27 Paid Members Posted July 27 I "finished" Oddworld: Soulstorm over the weekend - by which I mean I got one of the bad endings, and there's apparently extra levels after that if you do better. I didn't care enough to carry on playing. It's a game I bought years ago on PS4, and had never taken it out of the box, and then ended up playing the PS5 version for free on PS Plus instead. Apparently it was extremely glitchy on release and got really bad reviews as a release, and thankfully by the time I got to it most of that was out of its system and I only encountered two annoying glitches. The main thing is that it just feels like a step backwards. Abe's Oddyssee was brilliant, and felt really innovative and new, and the remaster did a really good job of making it feel fresh for a new generation while also being nostalgic for people who played it the first time around. This one just had absolutely zero new ideas; any new features just felt like they were there because they're in every new game - it didn't need a crafting system, and actually all that does is add an unnecessary layer of admin to getting one of the four or five items you'll ever actually use in the game. The speech system has been simplified to only being able to say two things to other Mudokans, the level design feels clunky and often actively unpleasant - I don't mind high difficulty levels in a game with infinite lives, but there are so many needlessly fiddly timed jumps where it's either the controls or the camera letting you down every time, and it's all just ugly and repetitive, never has the charm of the original. It's a shame, because I remember back in the day the Oddworld team had really high hopes of it being this genre-spanning series, of doing RTS games and all sorts within the setting, but they've never matched, let alone exceeded, how good the first game was. Wanted something relatively simple to play after that, so I've been playing The Rogue Prince of Persia which is a perfectly acceptable roguelite side-scrolling PoP game, and Coral Island which is a blatant Stardew Valley rip-off but kills time well enough. Ironic Indie Lad Posted July 28 Posted July 28 I've been making my way through Final Fantasy VII Rebirth at a snails pace since it came out on the Switch 2. The original FFVII is probably no less than top 3 favourites of all time for me and I really enjoyed Remake (I played it on PS4 and again on PS5). I simply didn't have the time for Rebirth when it came out on PS5 and ended up waiting for the Switch 2 version. It isn't truly physical as, like most Switch 2 games, its a "game key card". It did come with a nice Magic The Gathering Zack Fair promo card though so it still satisfies the collecting part of my tiny brain. It's obviously not the best version - there's sometimes some quite noticeable pop-in when you are in open areas and some of the textures are n64-esque at points. But overall, to get a good version of this running on the Switch is really impressive in my opinion. Most of the time it looks and runs really, really well and I don't ever feel like I am playing a compromised version. I am about 30 hours into this which is the most time I have put into a game in ages. I think it improves on part 1 in every way. I had £30 in Amazon Vouchers from work and was considering buying Starfox. I ended up changing my mind and buying Marvel Cosmic Invasion. I've had quite a few shots of this now with friends and family and it really is a fantastic beat em up. So many stages, so many characters, loads to unlock, full of easter eggs, beautiful pixel art. It's basically the exact game I would want in my dreams in about 1995. Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted July 28 Paid Members Posted July 28 Had a go at Crash Bandicoot at the weekend - but not for long. Just not a fan of this at all with its ridiculously obscure secrets and I gave up on that level with the collapsing walkways and the pigs. Gave the sequel a go and I like it a lot more even though it still has its issues with obscure secrets. The levels where you have to run towards the camera are really stupid. Quote

If this is the level I'm thinking of, it's a fucking nightmare to do it in the spirit of the game, but you can get through the level far easier by simply running along the ropes/balustrades. Quote
Paid Members gmoney Posted July 28 Paid Members Posted July 28 Crash Bandicoot 2 came with the very first Playstation I ever had and I have absolutely no fond memories of it, which is telling. I don't even remember not liking it, it just didn't make much of an impression and as soon as I had other games I never went back to it. Quote
Members SuperBacon Posted July 28 Members Posted July 28 I've never got on with the Crash games. Far too hard and massively frantic, I'd rather piss about with Croc or Spyro than that nob. Watched this last night and thought it might interest a few of you. Got huge nostalgia waves seeing some of those menus. Demo discs were ace. Quote
westlondonmist Posted July 28 Posted July 28 I got efootball Kick off for switch 2. It's very basic but quite easy to get into, for £12 I thought it was worth it even if the kits are all out of date. Quote

RedTwoster Posted July 29 Posted July 29 I completed Pragmata last night and my goodness that ending had me in tears. A beautiful story, and an incredible game - easily my game of the year so far. I absolutely rinsed it too, completing all of the extra content because I was having so much fun with it. I played it on Switch 2, but there are a few frame rate issues on that console with this game. It clearly didn't stop me from enjoying it - a lot - but if you have a more powerful console to play it on, in this case I'd recommend taking that option. Quote

From what I gather it's the same modes as in the other cinsoles/PCs, but because of Nintendo's stand on microtransactions there are none. It's more generous with the in game currencies you get after matches. It is a shame there's no proper Master League mode, but it's also a lot more convenient and quicker to play a game than EA Sports FC. @BigJagI think it has the Kick Off subtitle because it's easier and pick up and play than the other versions. I've been playing through Outer Worlds again. It's fun when I'm playing it, but like Quantum Of Solace I couldn't tell you a thing that's happened after I've done it. Also picked up Mudrunner because I'd earned enough points to claim a fiver XBox Live voucher and it looks interesting. I've done the first challenge level. They're ostensibly extra tutorials after you've done the main tutorial. Quote
Moderators Chest Rockwell Posted July 30 Moderators Posted July 30 Anyone got a recommendation on the best budget tennis game on the switch? There's a slew of them for a fiver or less or seems... One of them must be the most okayish! Anything that lets us wave joycons around like tennis rackets will do, ideally one that supports 4 players. Quote
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted July 30 Paid Members Posted July 30 You probably want to wait for Switch Sports Resort to come out if you want joycon swinging fun. I'm trying to remember whether the Gameboy Mario Tennis is on the Nintendo Switch online pass thing. Quote
