Merzbow Posted July 7 Posted July 7 Mass lay-offs at Microsoft gaming divisions including half of id software where it might acually be every single coder sacked. Obsidian and Zenimax Online have also been gutted. MS had a free goal to score against Sony yet do something even worse. Quote

RedTwoster Posted July 19 Posted July 19 I’ve finally got round to playing Pragmata, and what a brilliant game it is. Probably my Game of the Year so far, the hacking-and-shooting mechanic is so tense, unique and exciting that the game feels like an absolute thrill-ride throughout. It’s also very unique, taking familiar elements to create something entirely new. I’ve also been playing The Adventures of Elliot, an HD-2D Zelda-like from Square Enix. It’s very reminiscent of older Zelda or Ys games, and as you unlock more and more abilities it becomes more and more fun to play, although I enjoyed it quite a lot from the start. Another GOTY contender for me, and if you like the genre, you’ll enjoy this I imagine. Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted July 19 Paid Members Posted July 19 (edited) I bought a DS because what I really needed was access to more games. I've been playing New Super Mario Bros. and there's nothing quite like a Mario game, is there? For all the excellent platformers I've played on my Steam Deck, Mario games at their best are still a level above everything else. I also started playing Retro City Rampage. Not massively impressed by this but it might improve as I play it. Compared to other parody retro actioners like Broforce and Huntdown it's got a lot to live up to and they were both excellent from the very start. For all the excellent platformers I've played on my Steam Deck, Mario games at their best are still a level above everything else. There are some great platformers on both the DS and 3DS, although some are ridiculously expensive these days. I love the minigames in NSMB too, they’re really good fun. Some recommendations (DS only, since that’s what you’ve bought): Kirby Superstar Ultra Arguably the best Kirby game ever - loads of game modes and all quite varied, it’s essentially an anthology of Kirby, and it’s tremendous fun. The Legendary Starfy The first - and I believe only - time this previously Japan-only Nintendo franchise came to the West. It’s slightly Kirby-esque in that it’s a very accessible platformer and quite easy, but that doesn’t stop it from being a lot of fun. Okami-Den More a Zelda-like game than a platformer, but it’s great fun. It’s a spin-off from the original Okami, although not (as far as I know) connected to the original game as far as the story goes. It makes great use of the touch screen and there are plenty of fun minigames keeping the whole thing feeling very fresh throughout. Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure I’d totally dismissed this one based on the name, thinking it was a Professor Layton rip-off, but it was available for £2.50 in CEX (and still is) so I took a punt on it after seeing that it reviewed well. It’s actually a really unique puzzle platformer. You defeat enemies in the top screen, they appear as blocks in the bottom and you match them up to clear the screen. I think this one was overlooked a bit because of the shitty name, which is a real shame. Soul Bubbles A genuine cult classic, and I’m absolutely amazed that it’s ended up available for just £2 in CEX. I would have put money on this becoming one of those games that skyrockets in price, particularly since it can only really work on the DS or 3DS thanks to the touch screen. You guide spirits through a maze by blowing bubbles. The closest thing I could compare it to is Locoroco, although that’s not a perfect comparison. It’s brilliant fun, and there’s pretty much no way you could port it without significantly changing what the game is. Quote
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted July 19 Paid Members Posted July 19 Okamiden is and isn't a sequel. There are extra mechanics, the chibi art style is cute. I had it on my DS and while it's not a patch on the PS2 original it's still a lot of fun. Quote
Paid Members Devon Malcolm Posted July 19 Paid Members Posted July 19 Cheers @RedTwoster, I'll add those to my list. Haven't played a Kirby game since Kirby's Pinland Land, I think! Quote
Merzbow Posted July 19 Posted July 19 Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure are solid titles too, Sonic was consistantly good yet almost entirely ignored on the handhelds while the major console games were fucking things up in 3D Quote
Paid Members Jazzy G Posted July 19 Paid Members Posted July 19 I've been playing Wreckfest on my XBox because it's on Gamepass. It's fun. Some Destruction Derby vibes. Some of the actual racing is pretty good as well. Need to take an afternoon and have a proper play at Assetto Corsa. I saw a free Brazilian stock car game on Steam that I've picked up. It claims to run on a potato, so I've stuck it on my non-college laptop to see how true it is. Still need to have a bloody good organise in the flat so I can try and set up my new race wheel and pedals. I'll try and play racing games on it, but we know it'll end up being for OMSI and Euro Truck Simulator etc. Quote

Merzbow Posted July 21 Posted July 21 When Quake 2 was finally given a modern port they had MachineGames add a whole new campaign called Call Of The Machine to it and it might just be some of the best FPS action in years, it's only six missions long but they're all massive with multiple maps and do things that were never thought possible with the engine back in the day. It's pretty much what I would have wanted from Quake 4, the only complaint that it's punishingly difficult if you're not playing fast enough. Quote
The Gaffer Posted July 24 Posted July 24 On the flip side of re-releasing classic shooters, Halo: Campaign Evolved looks rubbish. It's the industry - I know - but it's just such a bare-naked product of commerciality that doesn't seem to be driven by anything else. The original still looks and feels gorgeous. And if you really must, there's the Anniversary edition which is a decent balance between faithfulness to the original art style and maxing things out to look decent on the TV you bought post-2005. This stuttering, Unreal Engine nightmare is almost satirising the consensus that Halo actually is actually dead. It's crazy that it's one of Xbox's big aces in the hole for the year. Quote
Merzbow Posted July 24 Posted July 24 I didn't even know this was coming out, heard zero hype for it and just now checked the Steam page.. yeah it looks like they fucked up here with many weird bugs if you can even get the game started. Quote

I think it looks stunning. I've seen plenty of people of video games forums playing the early access, glowing about how good the graphics look. Digital Foundry raved about it and said it runs great on everything, including a Series S. And they are extremely picky. I can't wait till Sunday to play it. Edited July 24 by Cousin Jim Bob Quote
Paid Members LaGoosh Posted July 24 Paid Members Posted July 24 I've never had an X-Box so I'm quite excited to be able to finally after all these years be able to play the flagship franchise on my Playstation. Quote
